The wife and I recently made the LONG drive from Houston to West Texas to spend some time in the Davis Mountains and Big Bend National Park. After spending what seemed like endless hours looking at desolate terrain, I could not help but think of a good friend who once had a lease near Sanderson. All my life, my deer woods have consisted of lush hardwood and pine forest, coupled with green pastures. I'm sure there are those who have good reasons to hunt in such desolate country and would quickly turn up their nose at hunting timber country.

We’d prefer it if you stayed in Houston.

I can understand how you don't see the beauty which is West Texas.

I love the cactus and sagebrush for my deer hunting. Most people think nothing can live in such a place, but the hills and draws are alive with game.

Sometimes you have to make do with where you live. I sure as heck would not want to have to load up and drive to east Texas to have to hunt deer. There are plenty of game animals out here and fewer people, which makes it a workable situation. If you do not like it out here, why did you bother to drive all the way out here?

Did the wife play the music real loud on that 22 + hour round trip "journey"?

Big timber can be pretty but I feel closed in borderline claustrophobic if I spend too much time in it. Give me wide opens spaces, big sky and room to see any day of the week.

I think that view is beautiful.

I don't mind hunting big timber, but prefer the beauty of going west beginning at the western edge of the piney woods.

Referring to a hatred for deer is a tongue-in-cheek way of seeing a lesser need to endure a given challenge in hunting them. For example, staying close to the fire on a 20-degree morning might be the result of not hating them as much as before.

West Texas is beautiful and has far more deer per acre than East Texas in my experience.

if your passion is staying close to a fire on a 20 degree day, then so be it. You don't have to be deer hunting to do that.

I know a lot of people who load up and head west or south to hunt deer.

Don’t know many that load up and head east though......

You can keep that timber country though...keep that and your buck master magazines and your pump action Remington 30-06’s

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I see the beauty in all parts of the state. I enjoy hunting deer in timber and I enjoy hunting deer in panhandle, south Texas and the hill country. I think hunting E Tx will test a persons patience and determination. As I get older I think I prefer it, the beauty of the leaves turning, sitting in a tree stand, hearing the deer move through the leaves. May not see 10-50 deer in a sit but just my preference. May be because that’s where I cut my teeth.

I have hunted all over Texas and the worst day hunting anywhere is better than the best day working. I like ETx hunting the least. I really love the big open country out West.
Im a little surprised you would come on here and cut it down cause you have to know you will get hammered.

I'm well known for using titles in my post that attract attention in order to generate good discussion. No question there is great beauty in West Texas and a lot of wildlife. It's the remoteness and desert terrain that I find non-appealing. Agreed, a softer approach would have been to ask what hunters see in driving 10 hours to hunt in the middle of a desert?

I agree with most here and think South and west Tx is a much more beautiful place than a bunch of think pine trees any day of the week.

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

Now let's be honest, what is more pleasant on the eyes, miles of nothing but flat land with mesquite or rolling hills of pines and hardwoods?
