Last week in NM we stumbled across this old log house. Actually, there were four buildings on this site making us wonder if it was more than just a dwelling. Deb thought that it may have been a stage stop but the only source for water that I found was a large cistern that was filled from gutters on this house.

What a great discovery! And like you said, if only the walls could talk you through their history. Probably some hair-raising tales to tell. Was there anything inside the buildings? Traces of previous occupants??

Not sure how far they had to haul the huge timbers but there was only juniper in the area today. Perhaps all the big trees were removed in the construction of these dwellings.
Adios,
Gary

I went down a wormhole about NM mining ghost towns one day. There are a lot of them. Maybe this site can help-

Pretty damn neat

Definitely makes you think how much more a simple time it was back then versus now....albeit a hell of a lot tougher!

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

There were a few old glass jars and of course, Prince Albert cans. Roofs were falling in so I didn't go inside as I was more interested in hunting. Drove less than half a mile from here and called a pair of coyotes so I forgot about the ruins pretty quickly. Saw several chimneys standing among log piles in the distances but did not walk in to investigate. May go back this summer to see what I can find.
Adios,
Gary

The blast of winter we had a month ago makes you realize how tough people were back then to live in that environment. Thanks for the post. up
