There aren’t any lochs on that canal, are there? Nope. There are no locks. Don't need them to navigate the Suez. It is flat as a pancake there. Locks are used when there is an elevation gain and the ships need to be lifted. Panama Canal is a good example of that. The Suez is basically a straight shot from both ends with a big natural lake in the middle. Ships heading north or south pass each other in the lake and continue on. They do one transit a day with at least 50 ships heading in each direction. I have made that transit at least a dozen times.

They're going to have to bring in big floating cranes to unload that thing. At first I was thinking maybe a sky crane would work but those 40 ft containers average 70-80 thousand lbs loaded. About 2 million barrels of crude a day goes through there and about the same in refined product. Not sure it will effect the American markets but it might the European. There's a pipe line runs parallel to it that has almost 3 million barrel a day capacity and I'm hearing it's only at around 50% capacity.

The saga continues. Late Saturday, tugboat drivers sounded their horns in celebration of the most visible sign of progress since the ship ran aground late Tuesday:
The 220,000-ton Ever Given had moved.
Granted, it did not go far — just two degrees, or about 100 feet, according to shipping officials. But that came on top of progress in the days before, when canal officials said dredgers had managed to dig out the rear of the ship, freeing its rudder.
By Saturday afternoon, they had dredged 18 meters down into the canal’s eastern bank. But officials cautioned that the ship’s bow remained firmly planted in the soil and that the operation still faced significant hurdles.

Now there is talk of unloading some of the cargo. Should have called the pirates, they would have been finished by now.
