When I was a kid (half century ago) and riding my bike to town, it started hailing. Big hailstones, and big enough to scare me. I got under a cedar tree for protection. Going on memory, the hailstones were about golf ball size, and they hit the asphalt with a loud whack. Since then I have never seen bigger ones.
When I was working for Texaco in Houston, at the Galleria, some coworkers lived in Bellaire. In about 1991 or 1992, a hailstorm fell on Bellaire and stripped the trees of all leaves, and bouncing hailstones broke a lot of windows and damaged cars. I don’t know what size those hailstones were, but they were obviously very big.
Has anybody here really ever seen a hailstone the size of a tennis ball? How big have you seen?

Baseball. But they were soft and shattered on impact. The ones that are solid balls of ice that hit and bounce are the mean ones. The soft baseball ones did enough damage though.

1974 - 75 in Arlington, Tx size of softballs. Come through our back shade cover on our porch (green fiberglass sheets ) they were massive. Made some impressive holes. Worst I have ever seen. I was 6 at the time.

Been through baseball sized in Reno Tx and some slightly bigger than that in Tulsa that we’re approaching softball sized. They were big enough that they were coming through the roofs of campers and trailers in Reno and the storm in Tulsa absolutely destroyed everything. Not only did it wipe out my trucks but did over $50,000 worth of damage at the house.

Bowling ball size was reported in Wylie a few years back.... They went through the roof, decking, and ceiling. People had vehicles parked in the garage that still received hail damage. Personally I have seen softball.

Yep, "solid core" baseball size hail drivin by 80mph straight line wind. Violent. It'll make you get real religious real quick. Horrifying when the blown windows send glass across the entire house and the sound of sledge hammers pounding on the roof. A nearby singlewide mobile home had hail blast through the west wall and penetrate the east interior walls. Will forever make you pay attention to to the severe thunderstorm warnings when they are issued.

1970 softball sized hail that came through the roof, the asphalt shingles, the plywood roof decking and the inside sheetrock. When they stripped the roof to put on new shingles, they found tha they had to replace a lot of the plywood decking.

I remember the hailstorm that hit mayfest in fort worth. they were softball size. it was carnage. I remember these very well. You don't forget them. A friend of mine lived on the East side back then. He had a 59 chevy pickup. Heavy steel body and fenders. Those hail stones caved those fenders in. He had some come all the way through his roof and into the house. Same sort of thing in East Dallas about ten years ago. Devastating.

Personally I have seen softball. My son went through that storm. He was scared to death of storms for years after that. I got there about an hour after the storm came through, and although there were no hailstones left, the divots left in the ground were unreal. It looked like someone had placed a cannonball in the yard and then hit it with a sledgehammer, driving it 3-4 inches into the soil. It truly looked like a war zone. It took months before that neighborhood was back to normal.

Biggest I've seen is almost the size of baseballs. 2012ish when the wife and I had just moved into an apartment in Dallas. By sheer luck we were about the only ones who didn't get their car windows shattered...did very significant damage to our vehicles though...I can't remember how much damage it did to the wife's car (we weren't married at the time so her Dad got the check) and did about $14,000 worth of damage to my pickup. We were parked under some live oaks and I think that saved us from worse damage.

The biggest I've ever personally seen was Grayson County in May 1988 or 89. I was 5 or 6. They were tennis ball size. I remember the wheat fields looked like they had been shredded and smashed. The biggest I've seen (although not with my own eyes) out here in west Texas was the picture below. It's a picture of the aftermath on one of the greens from the old course at OCC. This was June of 2017.

I've been in the roofing business since the summer between my freshman/sophomore year in high school (52 now) and have seen it all. Biggest I personally saw was East Dallas mid 90's when one about the size of a bowling ball (and in reality those sizes are a bunch of baseball/golfball stuck together) It went thru the roofing shingles, thru the plywood, thru the sheetrock/insulation and landed in the living room of the peoples house. The most force from one was Amarillo several years back....baseball coming in sideways with the wind.

I remember the hailstorm that hit mayfest in fort worth. they were softball size. it was carnage. I remember that storm. I was listening to the HAM storm trackers/spotters on my scanner. I recall them saying Softball and/or Grapefruit size Wasn't that the same storm that pretty much destroyed that office building by downtown Ft Worth?

Twister comes over the mt. and blows the front of the Wal Mart out. Nobody killed but a beagle wandered out and fell over dead

Personally I have seen softball. My friends parents live in Wylie and he told me hail came through their roof.We were lucky and didn't get any of that but we got a new roof out of it.The wifes car took a big hit. They replaced the hood and cut the roof off and replaced it

Maybe 3 years ago or so I was in Wylie (Collin County) during a hail storm. Softball size and bigger. Almost $8k damage to my truck. Hail straight through building roofs to the inside.

Tennis ball size twice. First time I was around 10 years old one late evening, it just got dark we were playing behind John W Carpenter elementary school in Oak Cliff. All of the sudden it got real still and then it was like the world was being torn apart right on the other side of the school, we got underneath one of the covered stairs that led into the school waiting to see what the F was about to happen? Then all of the sudden it started hailing like a Mutha Fatrina, no rain initially just hail, we were actually happy to see it because we thought a Tornado was about to have our azz That Mayfest in FT Worth incredible with Grapefruit size hail that spread destruction over a large area killing livestock etc.. Wylie on was intense but not near the scope of the Mayfest one

Bowling ball size was reported in Wylie a few years back.... They went through the roof, decking, and ceiling. I was there for that. Bowling ball I'd say is a stretch. They were certainly softball and bigger. Some were I'd say approximately cantaloupe-sized. Regardless, yes, they went through roofs and did damage to the inside of buildings.

Egg sized 3 years ago in March. $100K in damage to my property not counting vehicle damage. Never want to relive that event.
