I really enjoy the history of how different foods and snacks were discovered and marketed to the point that multi billion dollar companies exist today. Lots of popular foods today started out in someone`s kitchen and were sold for pennies. I spent 31 years in the retail supermarket business and seen lots of changes in what people purchase to feed their families and how companies have changed how they market and merchandise products in the last 50-60 years. .

Here`s an interesting fact. The Hydrox cookie was produced by Sunshine before the Oreo cookie was produced by Nabisco. Nabisco actually stole the idea from the Sunshine baking company and made a better tasting sandwich cookie . Oreo is actually the number 1 selling cookie in the world and most people don`t even know or remember what a Hydrox cookie is.

If you have something interesting you remember about a food item let us know. Keep it going.

One oldie, but no-goodie for me is "Good and Plenty" candy. It might be our oldest, and most successful licorice, but not for me. Gagged down a box about 65 years ago, and have never had another. Just can't do black licorice!!

I remember the Hydrox cookies. Wish I could find some, they did have a different taste than Oreos.

Aztec Indians are partly responsible for inventing peanut butter. I would not have grown up if it wasn't for peanut and butter sandwiches.

Once upon a time I read somewhere that sweet N low is derived from coal, and was discovered by a coal miner/worker that noticed a sweet powder on his lips while working.

I have not heard "Hydrox cookie" in years, maybe 3 or more decades. My mother made her own version of them. 2 shortbread cookies with icing inbetween them. Our neighbor in Spain was an English war bride, she taught my mother how to make them.

Cathy still remembers you kindly for the advice you gave her about Spain.

If memory serves me right, and sometimes it does, when Dairy Queen first came out with the Blizzard one of the add-ins was Hydrox cookies, not Oreos like they use now.

A circle topped with a two-bar cross is a Nabisco logo that stands for a European symbol of quality. Experts believe the design for the Nabisco symbol arose from the Cross of Lorraine, which was carried by the Knights Templar during the First Crusade in the 11th century. These knights, along with many other Christian pilgrims, went to Jerusalem, the capital of Israel, to recapture it from the Turks who were peacefully living there, whom the Knights mercilessly slaughtered upon their arrival to the city. Dark, dark, history; just like Oreo.

The geometric pattern of a dot with four triangles radiating outward is a symbol that once again connects Oreos with the history of the First Crusade. It closely resembles a Cross Pattee, a symbol the Knights Temples adopted by sewing the red or black crosses on their white robes and other pieces of clothing to distinguish themselves from soldiers of other religion.

But while some people do recognize this ancient emblem, most consumers see it as a four-leaf clover, with each leaf emphasizing hope, faith, love, and luck. No wonder why the Oreo company has so much luck selling more than 95 million packages each day.

Double stuff is too much icing for me, like the regular.

Have made many a meal growing up with a giant plastic fountain drink cup, filled with Oreos, then topped off with ice cold whole milk. Grab a spoon and get after it, same way I do cornbread & milk.

I much prefer the blonde Oreos ... but will eat the original if that's what's available.

Sounds like a rhetorical question haha...OF COURSE!! Trick is to dip the oreo for around 7-9 seconds to allow for milk penetration into the cookie.

Don't know about that, but they do go down easier.
