.308 Barrel Cut Down to 20" or 22"? #8208319 03/19/21 10:52 PM

I am having the barrel shortened on a Remington Model 700 XCR .308. It's 26" now. The rifle will be carried on my 4 wheeler, also walking in the woods and to deer stands. Of course this will never be a lightweight rifle, I just want a handier size than the 26" barrel.

Longest shots will be 350 yards max. Most inside of 200 yards. Would you recommend 20" or 22"?

I would appreciate your input.

God is so good to me.

20”. It’s cheap enough if you don’t like it you can cut it down further. You can not put it back on though. For some reason the difference between 20” and 22” is significant to me. I like the 20”.

16-18" for the distances stated will be fine.

I know a 16" and suppressed LR-308 will go 800 yards no problem.

The bolt action makes even more velocity. Chop it off short and handy.

Thanks, I was hoping you would chime in. I was worried about 20" being too short so I appreciate the perspective. I think I'll go shorter.

I have 2 16” rifles and they are my favorites to hunt with, not even close. One is an Encore so it’s even shorter than it should be.

I cut mine to 18”, but hind sight being 20-20 I would have cut it to 16”.

16.5", should go ahead and get it threaded also. Didn't notice much drop at 500 yds with 165 Game Kings.

16” if you are going to suppress it. It will be very loud unsuppressed. If you always have muffs on, not an issue. 20” would be much better on the ears and still very handy without a suppressor.

I couldn’t decide between 16” and 18” on my 22-250. I split the difference. No regrets.

Thanks, that's good advice I hadn't thought of.

I have been a pistol guy my whole adult life, seeking a lot of training and spending a lot of money on pistols and revolvers. My rifle experience is lacking so I appreciate the knowledge base on this forum.

It’s very loud either way without ear protection if you are not shooting suppressed so why have a longer barrel for hunting when it adds more weight and is less handy?

What Marc said.

Mo louder

I think 16” suppressed is the way. I plan on cutting my CTR 308 down.

TexFlip, Nice picture!

For me, I prefer 16" for suppressed gun. Non suppressed 308's I like 20".
