Been hitting the creeks for about a week now looking for the Sandies making their run. Have been catching quite a few smaller males and a few females but nothing to really write home about. I knew after that big rain 2 nights ago we should get a good push of females moving up and that's exactly what happened. I had to hit the secondary creeks because the primary creeks are still too flooded. Even the secondary creeks are flowing pretty good and water clarity is maybe 2" at best. But the fish are there if you know how to catch them. Only got to fish for about 2 hours but did really well. There were some giant females and even some really big males to be had. Only had one short fish out of the whole bunch. I could have put together a epic stringer but I threw them all back. Cant wait to hit my primary spot this weekend!!! Things are setting up really well for a fantastic Saturday!!

I got several PM's after my last fishing report. Best advice I can give you is that no creek is too small and running water is always better. I am fishing new water dang near all the time and some places are a gold mine and others are a complete bust. You just have to learn which water produces and which doesn't. Everything was in 2' of water or less.

Nice. It’s a lot of fun when they are running hard.

Cool. Not a species i am familiar with but looks like fun. I am guessing ultralight spinning tackle for maximum enjoyment?

Yep. You have to down size EVERYTHING when fishing for them in the creeks or you wont get bit. When these fish are on the main lake they are for the most part a pretty stupid fish, but in the creeks they can make even the best fisherman look like a fool. At times when the water is clear enough you can see them right below your feet but it you aint doing everything just right they will completely ignore you.

They are called Sand Bass (Sandies) or White Bass and put up a good fight. They also have cross bred the White Bass with Striped Bass and created a hybrid that are truly fighting fools.
The only thing I do not like about any of the above is they have some red meat mixed in with the white that is not very good.

As JCB said when sand bass are in open water in the lake chasing shad you can flat slay them, same thing when the spawn is going on in the rivers & creeks above the lakes.
You can put two or three jigs on 6lb test with a loose drag and have all of the fun!

There called White Bass, Sand Bass aka Sandies. Hard fighting fish for its size. Limit in Texas is 25 per man per day. If i remember correctly they have to be 10" or longer.

Today was hardly the slam dunk I was expecting. Worked two different creeks for less than 20 fish. Kept 4 giants for dinner. [Linked Image]

Spent many a day catching White Bass on the Pedernales (and yes I know every self respecting Texan calls it the Perdenales). Either go to the rapids at Reimer's and fish from the bank or jump in the boat and fish the mouth where it dumps into Lake Travis and work our way up.

A small white jig with black or green head would slay them. Sometimes the bigger ones (two pounder's) would push a group of shad against the shore and you could drop pretty much anything (but particularly a Thin-Fin) down deep and get some crazy action for about 10-15 minutes.

Good times growing up in Austin and the Lake back then.
