This one is on auto accessories garage site. I don’t have any experience with it. Never thought to lock the spare under the truck. I will now. I’ve been a victim of smash and grab and know how it feels.

TG it was just the spare tire, something you might never need

Only risk to me is when I have a new truck. Starting with second set of tires, my spare is always the best of the four that I just took off. Second set I only buy three that way. Sounds like yours was new. There should be a locking lug or something available like that to lock it on. Otherwise no pickup would have a spare in NY City, Chicago, etc.

Cable lock through the wheel and to the frame should work.

Yes, just bought a highly bicycle chain and lock to get it done. Thanx all for the feedback.

just be sure you cover the hole where the key goes in to prevent road grime/mud/muck/etc. from getting in the lock ... I spent several hours on the side of the road after midnight between Grandbury & Hico a number of years ago, trying to get the key into the lock and then getting it to turn without breaking off the key, glad I had a couple of cans of WD-40

How many times have you had a spare stolen?

My guess is bad luck you got yours out of the way. If my vehicle has a tire lock when i get it the first thing i usually do is take it off. I bet a lot more people have not been able to get to their spare due to a corroded lock or not having the key etc. than have had a spare stolen. Last couple times i have had to use my spare it was hard enough getting it out from under the truck with the flat/terrain/grass etc. under the truck last thing i want to do is have to jack with a lock etc.

Just buy a weatherproof lock with a keyhole cover. I have always had some kind of lock on my spare. When I first moved in to my neighborhood the thieves hit several trucks one night. The people without locks were missing spares in the morning. Payton Wright in Grapevine use to put locks on all their trucks. If they didn't the thieves would have a field day. When I bought mine the lock was supposed to be included. A year later I went to drop it and no lock. I went up there with paperwork and some jerk off sales dude said you just now noticed. I replied with I don't get flats that often. I was ticked at his attitude and the whole showroom knew it.

I had one of those weatherproof locks with a keyhole cover on my receiver hitch ball mount and it likely would work well as long as that cover stayed over the keyhole, which it didn't stay in place ... yep, WD-40 and some time resolved it ... I won't use one again without duct or electrical tape securing the cover in place, but good luck to those that do.
