Pretty amazing video.
I never really thought of Bobcats being much of a threat to anything tougher than a rabbit or a bird, but I got an appreciation one day for how wrong I was.
I was in my truck on one of the ranch roads....slowly driving down to our fish pond. I always keep an eye out for Hogs and Coyotes on the way.
Up ahead a bit....I noticed a Fox Squirrel about 5' up the base of a small tree. It was facing head down (like it was coming down the tree) and whipping its tail.
It was a bit strange because it was in a lone tree at least 30 yards from any others. It was also a small tree, maybe 10" in diameter. Just one off the side of the road near a clearing in the pasture. As I got closer I focused more on the squirrel and watched to see if it was going to come down the tree and why it was flicking its tail like they do when they don't like something.
Just as the truck came nearly even with the tree (squirrel still there) now just 20 feet away, I saw this brown 'blur' shoot up out of the grass, grab the squirrel and land at the base of the tree. It took me a second to realize what it was. It was a Bobcat. That cat grabbed the squirrel by the neck, landed on the ground, pinned it down and pulled up on the squirrels neck.
I kid you not....I could literally hear the skin, bone, muscles and tendons tearing. I will NEVER, EVER forget that sound. The squirrel was dead in a blink of the eye. I was shocked that I hadn't seen the cat in the 10 inches of grass. It was no more than 8' from the tree as I drove up. As soon as the squirrel became distracted by the truck, the cat made it's leap (maybe 6' feet away and 5' up the tree). All I saw was a blur....and the squirrel was gone.
I stopped the truck and the cat sat there with its prey in mouth. Looking at me indignantly. Then turned and walked away with its kill.
To this day....I can't get over how quickly and efficiently it killed that Fox Squirrel.... and the sound it made as it ripped the squirrels spine in two.
I garnered new respect for Bobcats that day.
