I was told recently that OPEN CARRY in Texas DID NOT require getting a permit or license. Be it the truth or BS. I thought a license or permit was required for open or concealed. Thanks

You were told wrong. A License to Carry is required as for as the state of Texas is concerned. .

There are still limited examples of legal to open carry w/o permit activities. “is engaging in lawful hunting, fishing, or other sporting activity on the immediate premises where the activity is conducted, or is en route between the premises and the actor's residence, motor vehicle, or watercraft, if the weapon is a type commonly used in the activity”.

Open carry of long guns without a license is legal.
