My wife bought me one for Christmas and said the same thing about the Traeger.

She got me a Pitt Boss and honestly couldn't be happier. One thing I absolutely love about it is that it has a sliding vent you can open directly above where the pellets feed. Works great for searing steaks, cooking burgers etc. I smoked some chicken quarters the other day used it to get a good crisp on the skin before letting it smoke.

Very sturdy and made from good material.

My BIL has had a Zgrill for a couple years. It's not fancy, no display screen or anything like that, just a turn dial. but it smokes great and holds temperature really well.

Just went through a fiasco with Pit Boss. They are having a lot of issues with the control boards on several models. I had a brand new vertical that was deemed a bad controller, they are on back order with no guarantee of delivery. Check out "Pit Boss Forum" for a lot of real life customer feedback.

That said, Rec Tec controllers are what are being "swapped" or "substituted" by owners.

Camp Chef has good reviews.

Definitely research the controller for whatever product, PID vs Analog.

Pit Boss would be a NO here.

Rec Tec are good. I have a Traeger but it's a TImberline which is insulated and not like the rest of their lines

I have the Pit Boss as well, have had it for about 2 years and love it. Cook on it 3-4 times a week. The sear slider is nice. I reverse sear my steaks and it is some of the best steak I've ever had. Smoke them slow until they get up to temp you want and then crank it up as high as it'll go and open the sear slider. Sear on both sides 1-2 minutes and it is perfect.

Only problem I've had with mine is the little plastic cover over the LCD screen has started to peel off. Still works fine, but doing to contact Pit Boss to see if I can get a replacement. Not really worried about if I can't. For what I paid for it, it has exceeded my expectations.

One of the things you'll hear most about RecTeq is how good their customer service it. Personally I've never had to call them for anything. This was on the RecTeq owners page on FB a few months ago.

One of the first ones I've seen that looks like it would stand up to the elements and critters at the lease. This one you made?

Pitts and spitts are the best...hands down. Made in Houston with heavy steel. My 1250 weighs close to 400 lbs.

Pit Boss, Camp Chef and Z-Grill seem about the same in quality. The there's Rec-Tec and Yoder on the top end. That Pitts and Spitts looks solid up

had the Pit Boss for a couple of years, it served us well. Unfortunately, I left it on and running after a cook for about 9 hours and damaged the electric controls. Sometimes it works. Also have the Camp Chef Pursuit 20 portable, really enjoy it. We pack it up and take it camping with us. Its a bit heavy but I really like fresh smoked meat snacks when camping.

My vote is for the Pit Boss as well since it is so versatile. Referring to the smoker/grill model Austin XL 1000. If you prefer heavier smoke on meats like briskets, buy a smoke tube for additional smoke. As for pellets, Bear Mountain is by far the best. Just make sure you adjust your P setting whether you are smoking vs grilling. With any pellet grill make sure you turn the power button off on the control panel (not temp panel) and keep lid open until fully burned and cooled.

Also look at Camp Chef.
Has a searbox option which will get to 900 degrees. I like mine holds temp real good no violent temp swings like other brands. Made in Utah and has 3 year warranty.

That's the setup I have and have been very happy with it. It's a Woodwind model. As mentioned above, if you want extra smoke just fill a smoke tube up with pellets and let 'er rip. Mine will smoke continuously for 6 hours like that.

Thank You Captain Obvious

Not everyone wants to

Buy wood if you don’t have acces to it ( causing a brisket to cost over $100 because smoking wood is $40 a stack )
Keep wood if your a HOA guy
Have large device in your yard that is hardly used
Babysit a fire all day and night
Listen to the spousal unit beach about all the above

The only thing is the power goes off and I can't use the smoker. frown Right now I have a gas grill,a Masterbuilt electric smoker and another smoker with external firebox that uses either wood or lump charcoal. I been kind of looking at the pellet smokers but according to a few people they don't replace all grills so I have been kind of on the fence about these pellet smokers.
