Was talking to my neighbor about it this afternoon.
His live oak is greenish-brown and mine is dead-ish brown. Both trees are about the same age and size. I pruned mine back in January after our ice event took out several branches. It was doing fine. Now it looks freezer burnt. I definitely lost most shrubbery except a holly tree we hate. Don’t want to lose the oak, but the way it looks, it’s tough to be optimistic that she’ll green back up.

All my plants are turning brown, hope it’s just a shock and they recover. I know the Japanese Maple is dead, along with my agave.

Honestly tired of the leaves. 3-4months of them constantly falling. None of my business but I sure hope you reconsider. Hate to see any oak tress cut down especially live oaks. You sure have 2 nice ones.

affect of subzero temps on live oak trees in north texas. Anyone have any insight on what to watch for? Let them go for another month or two. They are going to have to pull through on their own, not much we can do to help them out at this point.

We over react because we aren't used to it, but the trees are native and they are here for a reason. Down here in South Texas everyone buys ornamental cactus for their yards or businesses. All the native catus are doing fine, but all the ornamental are laying on the ground. The oaks will be fine, plus they are due to loose their leaves for the spring leaf drop.

Mine isnt doing great, definitely dropping a lot of leaves.
Superduty, if you are really getting rid of those, I would be happy to come and cut some of the limbs for firewood.

Honestly tired of the leaves. 3-4months of them constantly falling. I got sick of the leaves as well and cut down all of our trees in the front of the house, we still have Liveoaks in the back yard but those are the wife’s trees otherwise they would be gone as well. I have Tif419 and I keep it looking like a putting green and leaves suck..Now out front I blow the leaves back in the neighbors yard they came from , one guy asked me what I was doing and I said giving you your mess back. He didn’t find it near as amusing as I did but he didn’t say anything else

All my plants are turning brown, hope it’s just a shock and they recover. I know the Japanese Maple is dead, along with my agave. The Japanese Maple should be pretty cold hardy, depending on the variety. I have one in a pot and it looks fine. The agave, or century plants took a hit. My MIL's live oak is dumping leaves at an alarming rate... and they are all blowing into her pool of course.

Never understood folks with trees right next to pool, constant mess for someone to clean up! The shade my pecan tree provides is worth the mess. I had neighbors over on the fourth of July and they could not believe how much cooler my pool was. Mine is above ground and theirs is in ground. Leaves are not a real problem. It is the nut shells from the squirrels. I saw a guy on the news stating that unless live oaks were already stressed they will be fine.

Honestly tired of the leaves. 3-4months of them constantly falling. You’ll miss the shade. Not really house faces south. During summer sun is on other side.

Honestly tired of the leaves. 3-4months of them constantly falling. If leaves are the main concern, I would suggest having the tree service thin out the two oaks for you. One reason is that mature oaks will add an increase of value to your property. Second, the grass and shrubs below the trees have acclimated to the shade the trees provide. By removing that shade, your landscape will suffer and burn, especially going into the summer months. It will take several years for your grass to recover alone and possibly will even have to replant. Not sure if your tree service mentioned that but just wanted to make sure you were aware of the possible impacts. -Z I am aware, we are having the St Augustine ripped up and planting a new lawn, plus sun is on other side of house during summer.

Superduty, if you are really getting rid of those, I would be happy to come and cut some of the limbs for firewood. I am paying over 5K to have them removed and grinding both oak stumps. I am having a company Come out and plant 2 Shumard Red oak near where they are being removed. Might be able to coordinate something with the tree guy, he starts on March 29th.

Here you go this is daily this time of year: Live oaks drop theirs in the spring. Shumard oaks drop theirs in the fall/winter. Either way, you are going to be dealing with leaves. Not sure what you think you are gaining by taking out a beautiful mature live oak??

Not sure what you think you are gaining by taking out a beautiful mature live oak?? 3 months vs 1 month of leaves dropping. Not including the tiny seedlings from the live oak that gunk up everything and seep into my gutters with screens. They also wedge themselves on the valleys on the roof because of how small the leaves are and I have to get up on roof with a blower to clear the Valleys out on top of staining my shingles. These oak tree leaves are coming from the front of the house being blown onto my back, porch( south blowing wind) which is almost constant in the spring. North winds in the fall will blow them across street and will be in front yard(shumard oak). I KNOW what I am doing, I am not some 20 year old kid.

Looks like the issue I have with the cedar elms around my house. Leaves all year, sap sometimes. Glad my live oaks aren’t close to the house. My leaf blower stays busy.

Checked my live oaks this morning, at least half of them are just now budding out new leaves! They are also budding out across the entire branch structure - so look 100% healthy. They had all dropped 100% of their leaves in last week or two, so been watching for buds. These are all small trees (4" caliper and less) that we planted here within last 5 years - so I was worried that the -3 temps would hit these young trees hard. I gave them all a light fertilizing just before todays rains hit (1" so far), so they should really pop this week when the sun comes back out.
