I have a 20” PSA .308 barrel that I am looking to shorten a bit and send to Morgan with Class 3 for the chop and thread. I was thinking of going with a 16”, since it will wear a can most of the time.
That said, I’ve heard a lot of different folks suggest 18” or something between 16-18”
Curious on your opinions on what would be the most ideal size and why you would choose that size...
Longest shots on an animal (mostly hog or coyotes with my AR) would likely be 500 yards. While I would like to practice a bit further, most views on where I hunt are limited to around 500.
Bonus: If you had a 20” 7mm-08 barrel, would that change the length from what your suggest above for the .308?
Thanks - curious to see what y’all think. GB

18” threaded - it’ll most likely work well with the current gas system
16” with rifle gas may be a problem.

My 308 and 6.5 ARs are 16", my 7mm08 is 10.5".
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

16” with rifle gas may be a problem. 16” with rifle gas systems works great my CMMG MK3 CBR had that and never had a problem suppressed or unsuppressed. Ran like a top and had a great recoil stroke too. I just built a Wilson WC10 with 16” barrel. It has their intermediate gas system which is in between the rifle and midlength gas system. Still waiting on BCG so haven’t gotten to shoot it yet.

Opinion: I wouldn't pay to chop and thread the barrel you have. Sell it and get a WC in the length you want.

For a gas gun in either caliber, I think I'd go shortest possible. Not sure about the 7-08 but I know 308 full burns by 16".
I'm a dude who likes long barrels!

George, don’t mess with putting any money into that PSA barrel unless it shoots lights out. You could get $150-$180 most likely and put that toward a higher quality barrel in the configuration you like.

I'm with OKSF and jorge. AR10's are heavy enough without throwing a bunch of barrel length at it. I vote for 16" too.

I traded Bigpig for my .308 barrel and made him cut it to 16". It just works and it is heavy but it will eat.

I'd go 16 if it's going to have a can. I dont think 2" of barrel is going to buy enough velocity to deal with the added length. And AR10's arent that heavy
The secret to a long life is to try not to shorten it.

16", plus the can should net you some FPS back.
