affect of subzero temps on live oak trees in north texas. Anyone have any insight on what to watch for?

From the folks I've talked to in around the tree business they are in shock. My buddy in the tree business said if it's not split then it should be okay. Should being the key word. Gonna take a month or so to know for sure.

Mine have done it before, almost like they are molting. Makes sense. Lives cells where damaged so time shed and grow new

Live oaks drop leaves in the spring. Sometimes severe weather changes make them drop sooner. I would think they will be ok.

Live Oaks are pretty hearty and healthy trees should be just fine after looking ugly for a few weeks.

Going to be a lot of shrubbery and vegetation lost though.

I think I read somewhere that they can handle down to -7 degrees F.

I've seen the leaves on mine turn brown & drop at 10 degrees (my previous Feb low), and they come back just fine.
We got to -3 degrees here this time, so I guess we'll find out.

I think that (weight) of freezing rain/splitting branches is a more severe threat to them, than just the cold, since they are 'evergreen' in the winter and can take-on a lot of ice.

I've got two live oaks. They both look like post oaks without a leaf on them right now. We'll see how they do.

I am actually having both of these monsters cut down this month. These are massive live oaks.

Not after a major weather event/hurricane they don't. Not talking about downed trees, talking about trees that looked like they would make it and flagged them as keepers. Boy was I wrong, they continue to die one after another. Guessing was too much stress and salt from the storm surge.

Remember when it happened to all the 100 old live oaks in Galveston.

I have two live oaks in the front yard. One looks like nothing happened, the other has almost lost all of its leaves and looks dead. I will give it a chance to come back around this spring.

I can certainly understand the cottonwood but why cut down the liveoaks?

Honestly tired of the leaves. 3-4months of them constantly falling.

You’ll miss the shade.

If leaves are the main concern, I would suggest having the tree service thin out the two oaks for you. One reason is that mature oaks will add an increase of value to your property. Second, the grass and shrubs below the trees have acclimated to the shade the trees provide. By removing that shade, your landscape will suffer and burn, especially going into the summer months. It will take several years for your grass to recover alone and possibly will even have to replant.
Not sure if your tree service mentioned that but just wanted to make sure you were aware of the possible impacts.

This is a little off topic but have noticed all the mistletoe is turning brown and falling out of the mesquites. Not that I mind. I can't remember this ever happening before.....always seemed like a pretty hardy plant.
