Along with the losses to the individual land owners, there is going to be a hug trickle down affect.

1. Guides
2. Taxidermists
3. Meat Processors
4. Feed stores
5. Local Businesses
6. Motels
7. Etc.

The collateral damage will be enormous from this storm in many ways. Wildlife is just one of them. That photo is hard to look at.

While the death toll will be felt across most of this area, the massive die offs have and will occur where the populations exceeded the carrying capacity of the ranch. This has happened before and it will happen again, just Mother Nature's way of controlling the populations. In the mean time, the black headed buzzards and hogs are eating well.

I just made a circle along the river where I have a herd of approximately 40 axis hitting two feeders. I did not find any carcasses and I had not been there since Saturday. I think that I might be over the hump on this small place...they ate every bit of the alfalfa that I had thrown out on the ground as you would feed cattle.

Well, despite all the horror stories, I’ve got good news to report. Yesterday I went down to our prop on the Sutton/Kimble Cnty line near Roosevelt to assess and get some feed out. I saw more axis yesterday than I’ve seen at any other time. Literally saw 100’s of axis yesterday. They were out feeding all day long and only a few looked run down. Didn’t find a single dead axis on our place nor did I see more than 1-2 along I-10 which normally has roadkill every mile or two.

Didn’t see any blackbuck so I’m guessing they did get hit pretty hard.

I wonder how the Quail population will be affected. We found dozens of Meadowlarks dead on our ranch
Whitetail Deer seemed unaffected. We saw one sounder of hogs, all big ones plus a few lone boars. 3 are now coyote bait.

a buddy has a place out by Rocksprings.. said it was bad.. he had to dispose of 10 or so "trophy" blackbucks plus many young ones.. seems the exotics fared the worst...

On our ranch in north Texas, we made sure there was plenty of free choice protein for our wildlife. We have whitetail, axis and Scimitar horned oryx. We also put out out bales of alfalfa for them.
We got down to -12 degrees on the coldest morning. We have very thick cover but so far we have not seen any losses.

Was wondering what the deep freeze did to the Axis with antlers still in velvet? I am sure they were frost bitten at the very least.
