are only good for 10 years. Just a heads if you have them installed in your home. Posted this on TFF and wanted to share it here also. Had problems with ours during the rolling black outs and did some research and that is what I found. Seems the sensors are only good for 10 years and need to be replaced when that time is up. I also purchased some 10 year Lithium batteries to go in them to make sure they have power when needed in that time frame.

They don't last that long if they are hard wired, the backup battery goes dead, and they are chirping at 3:00 AM. Just saying...............

yep, didn't realize they needed replacing every 10 years until a few months back one of ours quit working, did a little research and found the 10 year replacement ... ours were all original from when we built in 1999 (or 21 years old). replaced all 8 of ours at that point.

We have a total of 9 in our house...its 11 years old.
About 6 months ago, one of them went crazy. I replaced just that one. Just a couple of days before the storm, all the alarms in the house started sounding...had to pull them down one-by-one to find the culprit.
Replace all of them...we were able to find the same make and model, so including the trip to HomeDepot, it took less than 2 hours to replace them all.

Here's an extra credit question: How do you dispose of them? They have radioactive material inside.

Call the fireman and they will come install free ones in your house......it their job

There are conventional battery operated, lithium battery operated, 120V with conventional battery back up and 120V with a lithium backup. The last one is usually sealed from being able to tamper with and come with a 10yr warranty, which doesn’t mean it will actually last that long. They’re dang good at marketing those. I have replaced some less than a year old before.

However in my world, backup batteries end up costing WAY more than just the price of the batteries so the 10yr are worth the extra $ up front. Usually buy them by the 100’s, sometimes 1000’s at a time.

I’d shoot one from the ceiling before listening to one chirp more than a day, much less 2 years.
