Made a trip to the ranch this week to check for busted pipes and start the protein program. Only pipe issue was a busted pipe going from the well pump to a valve near the house (easy fix).

Replaced an old 600# protein feeder with a 1500# unit. Put out 5000 lbs of protein and 3000 lbs of corn.

Now it's time to pull out the IR's and thermals for some prime time hog hunting between now and the start of the 100 degree days. From the looks of the sign on the property the hogs have exploded!

Yep, the game is on. Went down with only 44 bags Saturday. Don't have any friends, am not smart and went by myself. it sure was nice to be able to think about things and sort them out. In addition, no ocredentialne there to see me screw something up (not that that ever happens) and report about it. Our new all stand and fill set up sure came in handy. Easy as punch. Back up the diesel and feed off the bum[per or tail gate. Should have done this long ago. Got there at 10:30, pretty evenly disbursed the feed between 5 stations and went by the guard shack at 2:12. I was drinking a cold beverage at the Olde Ice House at 4:15.

We'll let this empty out and then we'll try the TLK Don't Shoot A Trophy Buck method and fill up with the medicated feed to rid worms.

I prefer to feed year round. Most the consumption was in Jan post rut, now they are starting to ease back with the winter weeds coming on, then into spring it will continue to drop off if it keeps raining.

^^holy cow!!! I just started using Bucees in the last year or so. Is that kind of normal "offseason" pricing or has it gone up everywhere. I going out in a week or two and need a pallet or two.

Not sure of the brand. I got it from Jacoby Feed and Seed in Melvin.

Yep! It was $8.20 directly from the source (Jacoby) and $8.99 at the Ace in Brady. Almost as much as bulk protein.

Would love to go year round but we would go broke. We feed protein free choice from late Feb (got a late start this year) through late Sept and corn year round. We went through 16k pounds of protein last year and estimate we'll go through 20k pounds this year.

It was $6.39 @ the NB buc-cees as of yesterday still. Cheaper than anywhere else I know of

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

I keep protein out at my little place all year as well and notice the same thing. My deer don't eat very much of it there so it really isn't dipping into my pocket too deep to do it.

I did notice right after the big snow they hit it very, very hard for about 3-4 days and now have slowed back down again.
I switched over to the new Rax-Max 20% feed that M-G & Foreverlast teamed up on and they definitely started hitting it harder.

Free choice biologic on my little spread.....going to keep two 300 pound feeders full year round this year...I normally switch to corn in October but this year I didn't.....we'll see what happens...had 2 different legal bucks that I didn't shoot and three 4-6 point young bucks that were fat and healthy. I'm excited as I've been at this years season

I went to Buccee's in Denton tonight to load up on corn and the cashier told me they were having a real problem with people stealing deer corn. I'm assuming hunters are stealing corn.

Picked up a ton of Antlermax last week and YIKES! $530/ton $60 increase over the last load and was told the March price sheet would be somewhere north of $600. 😟 Sorta taking the fun out things. Antlermax exclusively for years but may look at Gorman Milll's peanut based pellets if they are significantly cheaper. My local supplier also has the Double Down brand but I can't find much about it on the web. Their webpage would leave you to believe that it will grow elk horns on a billygoat but leaves you guessing as to were it is milled and what's in it. Leaves me a bit skeptical! Anyone with information?

Yep...it's feeding time but we're going to need some deep pockets...and declare war on the coons.

Apparently I must have violated one of the new rules. Darn, I miss the Texas Hunting Forum of old and the guys who gave me so much help in getting started. Made some good friends but never did strike up much a friendship nor get any good advice from an Equus asinus.

aeb,

I can't confirm DD protein has better stuff within, but I countless friends of mine say their deer eat more of it compared to all other brands. I plan to try out a 1000 lbs on my next trip as our anthrax recovery herd has barely touched any other brand we've put out since late 2019

Deer like peanut based products. When we used Dilley, we always relied on their RHR product. It';s about $2 a bag less. Doesn't have the vitamin K digestive supplement.
