I fell in love with Huckleberries when we were in Montana 4 years ago. I always keep a few jars handy from the resort we were at. [Linked Image]

.Those look great.

We dug up 10 huckleberry bushes from the woods behind the house and putting them along a fence in the back yard. Hopefully will have our own in a couple years. These were under big pine trees and make a few berries a year but hopefully with a lot more sun and water they will do better.

Slightly more tart than a blueberry....comes from the same family as the blueberry.

Tastes like a blueberry but is smaller with much thinner skin. Quarter inch across is a fair size huckleberry

Only get them up here in the Northwest. Little bit tarter than a blueberry. Usually a bit redder, but can be blue or black too. Super fun to take the whole family out picking. We do everything with them here, and huckleberry shakes reign supreme in Sept!!! Big tourist souvenirs!!

Do something similar here, Take my kids picking Mustang Grapes, until they can't take the itch anymore and it's no longer fun for them. My little girls are the champs. They don't cry until they are ate up with the itches...both of my Son's are wusses when it comes to this, Drives me crazy..

Looks like this years crop of Huckleberries around the house is going to be very slim, these had a lot of blooms before the freeze/ice that are all now brown and falling off. As a kid growing up in rural Mississippi I would pick a lot of them some years several gallons that we would use in pies, jam, muffins...

Here there are several different types but the main 2 are one that ripens in late April to mid May and another that ripens in September. The September ones are still sweet but more tart than the Earlier ripening ones.

love huckleberries ... some friends live in White Fish Montana that we visited several years ago, they picked them and she made huckleberry pancakes that were to die for!!! She also made a rhubarb & huckleberry pie that might be one of the best pies I have ever eaten.
