I was cleaning out some old files and ran across this article I had saved. It was by Mark McDonald in the Dallas Times Herald dated September 2, 1987. It was the first day ever of the Type II/Public Hunting Lands Program. I remember my leg was in a cast from a recent motorcycle wreck and I was not supposed to be out walking on it. I had thrown the crutches down for the picture. I just couldn't wait to check out some of the then new hunting areas so I toughed it out. All I killed that day was a 1 1/2 lb bullfrog. I sure wish I was 24 again.

I can remember the sound of the pumping jacks as I sat waiting for shooting light.
Spent a lot of time at Richland Creek

I hunted Richland Creek WMA a couple of years, took one decent 8pt, back when it was shotgun only.

I drove through Richland Creek sometime back in the 80's,just to scope it out. I think the dam was still under construction. As I recall there was a straightaway road section near the back of the area, basically just a muddy, rutted out truck trail that was lined with campsites, tents, trailers, even saw a converted school bus as a camper! I think guys just permanently camped out on the area for the 3 months of deer season. No drawing required, just buy the $35 AHP permit and bow hunt for the first month then switch to your centerfire rifle for the last 2 months of the season. It's not even in this type I book.I've kept every type 1 and 2 book since those days(yeah I'm a hoarder LOL)My how that place has changed.

Had applied for draw hunt @ Davey Crocket/SamHouston gun/deer whin first heard about the public (type 1 or2) cant remember... didnt get drawn... Cant remember the year OSBWMA opened up for public hunting... Still had a deer lease, did several archery deer/hog hunts on it the first year, & the 3 months hog hunts @ end of deer season... With the high price of deer leases, especially the games played, twas a true Blessing whin it opened up.. Gave up deer leases & wisely spent $40.00 on the then public hunting permit... swampthang have kept all the booklets also, they in a box in me old camper we left out on leases we were on... has some Awesome public land hunting opertunities.. Had rough night, alienbody parts, yet would still be @ OSBWMA hog hunten... Ya'll stay Safe, & best wish's... Social distancing from MN...

LAKE NAMER! LAKE NAMER!... Cool and congrats. I've got you beat by 4 years, although, I'm happy to let you get to the finish line before me. I'm just generous that way.

I hunted Richland Creek WMA a couple of years, took one decent 8pt, back when it was shotgun only. Its sad how restrictive the hunting is now, in 30 more years I could see there being nill to no hunting there

Thats cool I would love to see scanned pics of those somewhere online, I have the last 20 years of draw hunt books saved.
