Legal to purchase and hunt pen raised chukar this time of year to work an old dog? If so, anyone know where they can be bought?

You might try Top Flight near Columbus. I prefer pen raised quail.

Not a native game bird. I would think legal all year long.

You can get a permit from Texas Parks and Wildlife if you want to shoot them. I never shot any of my training quail. This was a pen raised quail. I liked to walk the quail out after the pup was green broke. ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/pics/userpics/2021/03/full-16668-283502-image.jpg) Here is another point on wild bobwhite quail. ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/pics/userpics/2021/03/full-16668-283503-image.jpg)

yes they are legal ---they need more pen space than quail because they are more agressive. If you release them to propagate it is illegal. To use them for training and recapturing them or shooting them is legal.

Try the preserve in Poetry. You only get one shot attempt with a chukar. You miss and they will fly to the next county.

I was going to raise some once and was told I needed to purchase a gamebird license and band each one because....
No Open Season Species with no open season are: the Attwater’s prairie chicken, the Montezuma quail, the partridge (includes chukar) and the lesser prairie chicken.
Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.

I never shot my training birds. My guess is that you could get your permit and keep any bird like this. ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/pics/userpics/2021/03/full-16668-283630-image.jpg)

I just want to get like 6 and see what my old 3 legged bird dog who hasn’t hunted in 3 years will do. Poetry does not have them.

Contact someone in NSTRA. They might know where you can find them.

Why do you need chukar? Quail are much easier to find.

You need a gamebird license if you are moving them from where they are raised and releasing them to hunt. If you keep them close and recall or shoot them for training you shouldnt need a license. We used to use coturnix out of traps to train birds in the summer. The neighbor called the game warden. He went to where we cleaned birds and sed those aren't native you don't need a gamebird license. If in doubt just call the local game warden-- he will probably apperciate that you asked and let you shoot the six birds.
