While we actually enjoy it, we're tired of splitting stumps. We burn a cord or more a year so I'm going to invest in one.

Was looking at 5 to 7 ton models from Tractor Supply and Harbor Freight. $500+/-

Anyone have any feedback?

Don't study about the $500 just load the wagon.

No Sir, no experience with electric ones but I did buy a 30 ton gas splitter from Tractor Supply and it runs like a champ.

A friend has the 5 ton, Central machinery, from harbor freight. He likes it. It will take 12 inch dia wood, he uses a 25 ft 10 ga chord with it. Just be careful of knots and go slow. That's all I have.

Buy the best one you can afford is my opinion. Were looking at buying a Dyna firewood processor to use some of the wood we destroy but we’ve got several different brands like the ones your looking at and they all have their pro’s and con’s. IMO I’d make sure you purchased one that allows to go vertical so you don’t have to lift the heavier logs up off the ground.

The electric log splitters might have their place but I gave the one I bought away after a few months, it lacked the brute force to split large logs and would get hung up all the time.

The one we use is a 20 ton gas

5-7 tons is light for log splitting. I heated my home in Pennsylvania for over 30 years with wood. I cut and split 4-5 cords a year both by hand and using a splitter. I would suggest a minimum of a 25 ton gas model. You can get one for about a $1000 at Lowe’s.
If your a vet you can get it for 10% less. It will be worth every penny in saved time and effort.

I just ordered this one today. I got the $300 one from Tractor Supply, but when it came in it was messed up from being dropped at some point so I returned it without using it. One thing I learned from my research is that most of the electric ones are designed to require two hands to operate, one holding the power button down and the other on the control handle. The one I just ordered can be operated with one hand so I can keep the logs lined up with my other hand if I need to.

I would also suggest going with at least 25 ton. I got a 25 ton at Atwood’s on sale for 699.
They will go on sale again here in a bit. You will be glad you did. The extra 200 hundred you will make up in time and effort in no time.

Rent a couple of them and try they out. It's a PIA to go through the rental thing, but before you put some major coin down on one of them, might be a good idea to check a couple out at your home with your logs.

Had one about two days. Most underpowered, hanging up piece of junk I ever got drunk and bought. Smashed it with my backhoe and bought a 30 gas that splits both ways. What I mean is when you hit the lever after one stroke on way back it will split the other way.
No wasted strokes and I like that. Hehehehe

I have a 25 ton from TSC I like it a lot.
I have one that hooks up to my tractor I’ve used for years. I do like it but I like the 25 ton more.

I'm hoping for the best with the one I ordered. I'm not a high volume splitter, maybe 1/2 cord a year. A lot of the wood I cut for myself is small enough in diameter that I don't worry about splitting it.
I've never owned one before because I've always done any splitting I needed to do by hand, so this will be a learning experience for me. I guess I'm getting a little lazy in my old age.

Found a Champion 9 ton for $650. That's reasonable I guess.

My concern with a gas powered splitter is I find myself constantly working on small engines. Maybe I'll get lucky.

I have the three point hitch hydraulic type, and get a lot of use out of it. I have it free standing so that I don’t have to hook it up on the tractor, other than the hydraulic lines. I didn’t get a gas driven one, because I just didn’t want another gas engine to maintain. Of course, if I didn’t have a tractor.....

Good point but not everyone owns a tractor. Different strokes for different folks.

No more then it holds I’d just buy bottled gas, also it should have a fuel cut off, so you can run carb dry.

I think you will be much happier with hydraulic. I still remember the day my grandfather showed up with one in tow behind the cj5 at our cabin in CO. Made short work of Aspen and Ponderosa for kindling. Although hindsight, I think It wore me out more because there was no breaks, trying to keep up with the stacking.
