I've caught some big fish on Fork in the Summer using bluegill.

We hook them behind the dorsal, as he shows, but also from the bottom lip up through the top lip and out.
Sometimes one method is better than the other.

I would rather hook a shad for blue cats and I don't know about bass as I didn't fish for them. Bluegills for stripers yes but bass

Do you hook goldfish in the same spot?

If you want your bluegill to swim up you hook it the way he did to the back above the lateral line or through the tail. For example fishing with a weight on the bottom and you want the bait to stay swimming up off the bottom you would hook it towards the tail.
If you want your bluegill to swim down, you hook it just behind the head above the lateral line. For example if your pitching a freelined bluegill towards a steep bank and want your bait to swim down deep under the cuts in the bank or down under bank tree roots. Great technique for spawning Ops.
If your bluegill is freelined under a float and want it to stay at a particular depth most of the time, hook it in the middle above the lateral line. Find the balance. If through the tail, the bluegill would end up on the top most of the time. If through the front, it would constantly be pulling your float down.
If your drifting or casting the bluegill like a lure and slowly retrieving it or if your weighted fishing in a current, then hook it through the lips.
And circle hooks rule. Otherwise a freelined live bait is just going to constantly have you hanging up as it swims into and around stuff.
