Do you think variable rates are too risky? Does everybody have a choice in Texas? Should Federal Taxpayer money be used to offset the large debts incurred by variable rate users? TEXAS LT. GOVERNOR DAN PATRICK BLAMES CONSTITUENTS FOR GIANT ELECTRIC BILLS: “READ THE FINE PRINT”“I saw the story about the high bills. Let me explain that. We have in Texas, you can choose your energy plan and most people have a fixed rate. If they had a fixed rate per kilowatt-hour, their rates aren’t going up…. But the people who are getting those big bills are people who gambled on a very, very low rate…going forward, people need to read the fine print in those kinds of bills.” https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2021/02/dan-patrick-texas-electricity-bills

Are variable rate mortgages too risky? Any cost that's "variable" is too risky IMO. I would rather pay a fixed, known rate.
I am still looking for the perfect apron, one with reinforced knee areas would be perfect.

I expect fixed rates to increase as well to cover the increased costs to maintain facilities in all types of severe weather.

It’s not smart to have a variable rate. That said, something is jacked up badly when folks are hit with electric bills in the thousands of dollars based on a few days’ use. A blind man can see that. Dan Patrick is a putz.

Dan Patrick is a putz. Yeah, the idjits searching for the absolute lowest cost were the ones who were jacked up. No one saw this event coming and the consequences it would engage or otherwise, they NEVER would have signed it. In this case, your "putz" is absolutely correct.

They took the risk, they pay the price. I am sure that they were smug after getting the very low energy bills at wholesale rates. Fixed rates are for fools....
Then comes the variable part of variable rates and they want to cry not fair!

This is somewhat akin to the thread on the chilruns and child support - so many want to be accountable for their action UNTIL there are adverse consequences.

Dan Patrick is a putz. Patrick is a putz. He's the poster child on how long it takes for a state senator to be elected with good intentions and become senate drunk in the state swamp. He became a senator when it became clear what the property appraisals were doing to the homeowner. What has he done? He wrestled his way to Lt. gov and ain't done CRAP. That weasel hasn't fixed a damned thing. But in this case, he's right. He didn't sign the contracts for the electricity for the homeowner.

I don't have a choice being on a co-op but they have a cap on wholesale Still expect my Feb bill to jump quite a bit even though we never set our heater above 64.. When I had the "power to choose" I would always select the lowest fixed rate for at least 6 months, then switch. Learned my lesson the hard way with TXU.

And I will assert that he has started pandering to the left in case Texas turns blue .Not in a major obvious way , but subtly .

Texas GOP congressman: Federal disaster aid will help homeowners with high utility billsA Texas congressman said Sunday that homeowners in his state who are facing shockingly high electric payments and damage to their homes resulting from recent winter weather would be eligible for aid from the federal government.
Speaking on CNN's "State of the Union," Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas) thanked President Biden for approving an emergency disaster declaration for the state, and pointed to that declaration when asked by host Dana Bash about reports of Texans facing massive utility bills following days of blackouts and water outages across Texas.
"Yeah, that's the current plan, is that the federal assistance will help homeowners, both with the repair...and with the utilities' cost," McCaul told CNN. https://thehill.com/homenews/sunday...ederal-disaster-aid-will-help-homeowners
