It caught jesus blood at the crucifiction actually, it is commonly identified as the cup that Jesus used during the Last Supper and Joseph of Arimathea use to catch the blood when Jesus was crucified ...

As the cup that caught the blood of Christ I can’t imagine it being miss placed or lost. Not in a box of grandpa’s stuff sent to the Goodwill.
Some organization, unlikely an individual, has it and knows what it can do.
Could be the Catholic Church, whoever the Templars are today or ??
