With all the trees that are down, I’m doing some serious chainsawing. And, since the Big Chill, I need to restock firewood. My problem is that I usually identify trees by their leaves, and that isn’t an option right now. If I take pictures of the bark, can you fellows assist with identification?

Yes and twigs are even better. Any forestry students on here should have learned that in dendrology.

To be determined

My first roommate at SFA was a forestry major. I remember helping him study with his leaf binder.

Dendrology 101 was leaves. Dendrology 102 was twigs. Both were big weed out classes for forestry majors.

Once it dries enough it won't matter. It will all burn. Just some better that others.

Elm and sweet gum are both a pain to split and stack, but they burn fine, some other woods, like aspen and cottonwood aren't worth the effort.

Wood technology taught identification by cut end of wood.

Looks like it could be elm/cedar elm. Look on the ground there have got to be leaves somewhere.

Elm splits like a champ for me, i have cut a ton of them down/up for firewood.

They call it pizz elm for a reason, smells like pee when burned. Hard to split as well.

Pizz elm in wyoming?

In my parents acre lot growing up we had over 100 trees, mostly cedar elms. Ive cut split and burned a hell of a lot of cedar elm. Nothing about it is hard to split and I have never noticed it smelling like pizz or called a pizz elm. As i understand it is a hard wood for whatever that matters.

I’ll try to split some tomorrow. If it’s elm, I’ll know pretty quick.

It isn’t a Gum tree, for sure.

Gum is a pain to split and pops a lot when burned. Cut one this year behind the that wasn't but about 6 inches at the base that I did not split but burned it. Could always tell when there was a stick of it in the fire.
