Howdy,

Can any of y’all give me a ballpark of what I should charge for someone to plant/harvest 40 acres or so of farmland in hay. I realize it varies by area; this is in the Waco area.

It is flat fenced farm land - not hilly mesquite filled land.

Thanks, JW

I pay $20 per acre to lease already established coastal bermuda in East Texas. This is with me covering all expenses for everything else.

I'd get $25-35 per roll that it makes, all else including baling is on the renter

I'd pay someone else to come put my 16 acres in coastal and I'd let them have all the hay.

Picked up a costal hayfield with some weeds paying 20 an acre. Pay 20-25 a bale to have someone bail it for us.

$2 a small bale or $20 per roll is what the locals are getting paid.

On cultivated crop land we get thirds or fourths.

This doesn't seem like enough to me. Our land typically makes 50 squares/acre, rancher gets 25%. 12 bales @ $6 is $72/acre.

I had a very small field but it was very good coastal. 17-1/2 acres. I let him set his own price to pay me. He said would "$650"
be enough. I said fine. That's just about $37.50 an acre. I did not care what the price was, it kept me Ag exempt. He sprayed for
weeds, fertilized, etc. Don't know how much he spent on doing that. He got a total of 84 large round bails in two cuttings.

The last few times I leased land to someone he baled it in square bales. I did it on the halves and kept some for my horses and sold the rest of my half to the local feed store for $6 a bale. It was top quality coastal and we usually got around 350 - 400 bales per cutting on 10 acres. I split the cost of fertilizer and herbicides.

When I had cattle we round baled 22 acres on the halves. We usually got 3 cuttings and I kept my half on 2 cuttings for my cows and traded my half of the third cutting to a guy who AI'd my cows.

If you don’t have livestock of your own then I would say $25 - $30 an acre would be a fair price if you don’t want to bother with fertilizing.

In the end, it's not the years in your life that count, it's the life in your years.

It cost too much to run equipment these days for me to do anything on halves. If it is good ground, i can do it on thirds with me keeping 2/3rds. If it is not great ground, then its on quarters with me keeping 3/4. This is with me paying for everything (fertilizer, herbicide, ect.)

Cash lease is more common in Coryell County. McLennan and Bell do a lot of share leasing, but tend to do much more crop than hay. $20-$30/Acre does sound about right. [Linked Image]
