Right on the line of probably/possibly getting a new truck in the next week.

Right now in a 17’ super duty 6.7 diesel

Pros: gobs of power, very off road capable compared to my 7.3 liter power stroke, fast, fun to drive. Will tow anything And is a tough truck

Cons: drinks fuel, with 37’s I’m getting anywhere from 12-14 mpg. Diesel cost is higher, upfront cost is higher and maintenance is higher. Basically it’s more expensive to run across the board.

I like my truck. The reason for me getting a new truck has nothing to do with my old truck per se, but it may be the right time to trade it off.

Looked at replacing it with the exact same truck, and they wanted $70k for it, which I am not willing to do. I sold my big travel trailer so the heaviest I tow on the reg is my UTV , but I tow it several days a week. My work life consists of lots of high way miles countered with lots of slow driving on caliche ranch road or rough ranch roads, a lot of dirt county roads thrown in.

Been looking at the 7.3 liter gas ford crew cab. Have heard good things about the Chevy AT4 2500, but I’m a bit leery of Chevy and their IFS set up, I don’t believe it’s a durable.

Want to stick with the 3/4 ton platform as I believe it’s more durable for my lifestyle.

Am I missing something ( other than future resale) or it is it a pretty clear choice a 3/4 ton gas truck is the way to go over the diesel?

Some decisions just don't make sense. I would tell you to choose a 3/4 ton diesel because I want a truck like I want a safe -- bigger than I need. That said, almost any truck would do you, so do what you want.

On the make item, I have had no problems with my GMC worth noting. I love the thing and it has been rock solid. Ford wants a premium for aluminum panels and I'm frankly not good with that. Someone wanted to give me $46k for my 2015 2500 HD and I almost took it. I looked at Ford and their $80-90k stickers and then I looked at GMC for a direct replacement being $73k. I would have gone with the GMC in a heartbeat.

FYI- I spec’ed out a F150 and F250 w7.3 and their where with in $600.

The new 2021 have a 10 speed tyranny and it's big jump % in GPM compared to your current.

That is the reason a 1/2 ton doesn’t make sense for me

Would you go diesel or gas?

How many miles have you put on your current 2017? If it’s more than 120,000 in 3 years I personally would be staying with a diesel. Just my opinion based on your towing a me driving style. Not that a gas truck won’t tow a SxS, but if you’re anything like me, you don’t drive slow and you don’t like losing speed going up hills.

I've found getting ahead is easy as long as you do without the payments others accept as routine. Bought my 2015 F250 in August of 2014 and if the engine or the fuel injectors go out, I'll replace them, write a check and go on my merry way.

Don't give me the write off crap theory I too often hear. Spending three dollars to write off one makes no sense.

I went from a 2013 GMC 2500 Duramax diesel last year in late Feb to a 2020 Ford F-250 6.2 gas. I got around 15.5 mpg in the Duramax and 12 or so mpg towing a 16' trailer on long trips to Pecos County. I get around 14.5 mpg in the Ford now if I run speed limit....lower speed limit and it will get over 15 mpg.....towing it is horrible. I got around 8mpg on the trip to Pecos County pulling the same trailer and load. Down here there is not that much difference in the price of gas and diesel...many times I have seen diesel the same price or even a little less than regular gas over the last 9 months now. Power wise the Ford gas will pull the load up the hills and out to Pecos County the same as the GMC diesel. It won't do the same with a heavier load though. With all the miles you put on I would stick with a diesel...just leave it stock with stock size tires. I know when I went from factory tires on the GMC to a 265, I lost 1 mpg immediately and over time it was more like 1.5-2 mpg at speed limit. When I first got the GMC it got around 17.5 to18 mpg with factory tires and driving speed limit. I made a trip to Kansas right after I got it and got almost 21 mpg from the northern Panhandle of Texas into western Kansas.

I agree 100%

This isn’t a “ man I gotta get a new truck “ scenario. I hate truck shopping. I hate buying a new truck. If this one ran forever it would be ideal

On the fence... My DEF HEATER, goes out every 70’ish k miles. It's annoying.

But after being in a diesel for last 20 years going to a gas is going to be an adjustment, especially power and towing.

I looked at going half ton to save my kidneys and back when hunting. Hard to find a bed long enough. Toyota is a negative.

Once you own a diesel it is hard to go back to gas. You're going to miss it.

And you're going to get most or all of that diesel money back when you sell/trade it. So it's a matter of if you can front that money or not. And with a used diesel, your potential pool of buyers is much larger.

If this one ran forever... well whats wrong with it?

I got a feeling you like the go pedal on your powerstroke. If your goign to put 37's on the new one the mileage will suck the big one in a gas or diesel and your are going to loose a lot of pep on the gas with the big tires. I dont think you will be happy with a practical decision so buy what you want. Personally I'd keep what you got, but it sounds like you want a new one.

Tremor package comes with 35’s and most are saying they are seeing high teens to 20 with 6.7 and 10speed tranny.

TFL hand calculated same thing

That is impresive. I would like to see the long term fuel mileage on 37's.

I guess sometimes I am probably out on new trucks and tires, even the 1/2 ton rams come with 33-ish inch tires stock.

The Ford 6.2L is a proven engine. Order one with 4.30 gears and it will do what you need to do.

Reason mine has y’all tires is it ride like crap with 20” wheels and 35’s. 37’s is a lot more rubber, better ride and off road performance is great.

If I got a new truck it would have 18” wheels and 35’s.

I was on a ranch today in the hill country....beautiful place and had great roads. But my 3/4 ton beat the crap outta us. It’s not good to drive off road where 50% of my behind the wheel time is spent.

I’m looking at a Tundra TRD pro now...mileage won’t be excellent but I will get a smooth ride and reliability. Also gong to look at 1/2 ton ford truck

ok, that makes sense with 20" wheels ... glad my truck has 17" wheels and 34" tires.
