3 times a day every day I have broke water... Both ponds, in several areas each pond...........

I have no idea why a cow would venture across a pond she has been around her whole life but she walked all the way to the middle. Pond was broke in several places around where she went...

I had to walk all the way out to her and wrap a chain around her. Was not fun.. Water was very cold and ice was 6-8" thick... but places were 1-2" getting that close to a kicking cow trying to get a chain around her and not going in was not easy...

I had bad day today and hope it does not get worse....

STAY OFF THE ICE!!!

Idiots walk out on ice for no reason...... I had good reason and it ended bad!

Before you start calling people idiots you should learn what is considered safe ice. 4” is considered safe for most humans. The ice I was on was between 5”-6” thick. I know because I watched some guys punch through and measure it.

People ice fish and set up ice fishing shelters on 4” ice all winter long in other states and it’s considered normal. I walk out on 5”-6” ice in Texas and get called an idiot. roflmao

^^Correct.

Even 2.5 inches will safely support a person in some situations - clear ice with no air entrained. More air/whiter color = the weaker the ice. My snowmobile has the lowest ground pressure on the market at 0.4 psi. Average person wearing boots exerts 2,5 psi - snowmobile is more than safe on 5 inches of good ice. That being said surface water ice can be extremely variable. You can have 12 inches in one spot and only 1 inch 10 feet away due to a spring entering the lake bottom or in the case of a skimmed over pressure crack you can go from 12 inches to paper thin in one step.

Last weekend 12 miles from shore on 19 inches of ice (12 clear and 7 white):

Ignorance is bliss!!! And stupidity comes in all sizes!! I do not think I called you an idiot but said only idiots walk on ice for no reason... Maybe you had a reason but MANY kids have walked on ponds and pools in the last few days and been hurt....

I lost a great momma cow today... She had a very small brain and walked on very thick ice.... from the bank to her I had ice that was very thick in places but thin in others.... I would have NEVER walked near BUT I wanted to save her... She was breathing when I finally got her to shore... She is now yote bait.... I have kids that I hope I have taught that what you did was not smart. Again I cant fix stupid.....

Sadly, that will be pretty common here as a byproduct of this freeze. frown

Dam that really sucks after trying to save her and all. Even chopping holes for them they can die in this weather. I have running creeks everywhere but this one little steer/heifer pasture. Been trying to keep it clear for them. Some of them have tried to wander out. Maybe this will be behind us soon enough. It' hard to lose a good cow.

After close to a week of chopping ice and hauling water, I'm sure ready for a warm-up.

Last evening's check of my tank showed the ice thin enough at the edges that stock would break through immediately. C'mon sunshine and high 50s!
