Most of the strong will survive, some of the weal will perish.

The strong survive.

Ungulates need roughage and calories to generate body heat. We feed hay 24x7 to our horses in weather like this. At the ranch they are dropping plenty of extra hay into the rings for cattle.

Our cows had icicles on their ears. The calves were running and bucking and feeling good.
Got plenty of hay for them.

I remember driving through Wyoming, maybe 7 or 8 years ago. It was in August, I would see cattle in lush green grass up to their belly. About 2 weeks later, I heard on the news that an unexpected cold front killed a bunch of cattle up there. The ranchers were caught off guard and didn't have time to prepare for the cold.

Cattle does fine. They will find a spot that blocks the north wind and huddle up. They need water more than food.
I’m lucky as both of the pastures I have cattle I have a creek that is running so I didn’t have to bust ice today.
Put out some round bales and dropped a little feed. They are happy as can be.

Animals are a lot tougher than we are. They were made to deal with Mother Nature.

Harsh winters will kill off a lot of animals up north. I'm pretty sure it wasn't that long ago they lost a lot of Antelope up In Wyoming and Montana after a brutal winter.
