I've been letting my pointers sleep in the garage and mostly staying in the garage. But now that it's not single digits I'm letting them stay out longer. It's a pain in the [censored] dealing with this cold. Not sure what's too cold to let them sleep outside in their igloo houses.

How are you guys handling this?

I’ve been keeping mine in the shop. Let them air out three times a day for 15, give them a drink, then back in the box.

They normally stay in a big outdoor pen.

I put up a portable kennel in the unheated half of my shop. They spent several nights there. When I saw this sustained blast coming I took it down and moved it into the heated and insulated man cave half of the shop. They have been there for several days now. Brought their houses in too. Thankfully our electricity has not been interrupted so they have been snug and cozy. I set the temperature at 55 degrees and let them out several times a day up till about 10 at night. They have not peed or pooped in the shop (wouldn’t hurt if they did because even the floors in the man cave are concrete).

Yesterday was the first day they ran around a lot since Sunday. During the bitter cold they would do their business and go right back in. I keep thinking about the dogs still outside and it bothers me.

I’ll let them stay back outside when the low temps get back in the 40s. Really the north winds are more important than the temps as long as it’s above 30 or so.

Mine are in the garage, let em out every 2-4 hours during the day for a 15 minute run in the yard. They drink when they get thirsty. The old dog gets brought in, but she wants out after 10 minutes. So back to garage. Lots of PETA folks around here now, so don’t leave them out unattended in this weather. They’ll get kicked outside when it gets to the 40’s.

Mine run the backyard 4 times a day to do their business and drink from a bowl I put out. They also eat outside and then back in their cozy kennels inside the back door unless my wife lets them out in the house.

I'm at the warm end of the state--still, dogs have been in portable kennels in the house at night.
If it is cold with no wind they sleep in the kennels in the bird truck on hay. However, since it was icy humid and windy with the last blast, I put thejm up at night in kennels in the house.

The night it got to zero I put mine in the dog trailer in the barn. Next morning at first light I went to let them out and obviously I'd not locked a door and two EP's were missing. I whistled and they came out of their barrels in the kennel and came running to me. They wanted a milk bone and drink of water but were otherwise just fine. That was the coldest night ever recorded at my place and the dogs all made it fine. I'm not going to worry about doing anything extra for a healthy dog in bad cold weather ever again. Old or sick dogs will get my attention. Healthy dogs will get dry hay to nest up in and plenty of calories because unless they are spoiled house dogs in the first place that is all they need.

My chessie went swimming in the pool at 5 degrees out side.

He Loves the snow and cold. It’s too a point I feel guilt having him in Texas

My 6 year old yellow is out for the count on my bed and the 2 year old chocolate lab is on the couch. They hit the dog lottery.

My 12 year old Brit is sacked out on the couch next to the wife. He has 3 beds, 3 blankets plus 2 couches and a recliner to choose from for sleeping locations. With all of that still sleep on the tile floor a lot, guess it is cooler. He sleeps anywhere he wants except our bed.

Just spent an hour scrubbing kennels. They were plenty nasty. Today is the first time I’ve cut the water back on. Smells lemony fresh now.

What are you using to clean kennels?

Yeah my inside dogs have it made, the outside dogs have this superiority complex thing going and I had to con them in the house with treats just to get them to sleep in the spare bedroom. First time my outside dogs have stayed inside at night in 9 years, and that was because they were being born.

Outside for mine Barrels filed with coastal till they could barely get in. Since the water would freeze so fast I feed once in the morning(3 cups+) and evening 4-5 cups. Both meals floating in water so I new they got enough water. The real surprise was 2 of the 3 put on weight. One 10 mo. old a lot, almost porky. Tough little suckers.

Mine do fine in their barrels with hay and pine shavings.

I don’t like hay in my dog houses. It makes a mess. It’s easier to put them in the shop when it drops below freezing.

Mine was living it up curled up in front of the fire. She's loving being back outside again.
