What % of the deer going to die this week?

perfect storm, food at its lowest level, lots of empty feeders, super cold.

I know ranchers are losing calves.

Can only hope it takes some yotes and pigs too.

It’s going to be interesting and sad to find out about the deer.
I think very few hogs. It will be hard to determine as those that die will be eaten quickly.
Totes, I don’t think there are any young ones on the ground yet, so most will survive.

My lease could use some of the older deer dying. Sounds bad but we don’t get enough MLD tags to properly manage the lease. We are stacked with mature 8s that are in the mid 120s that we would like to kill without burning a trophy tag. Too bad we can’t select we won’t nature to take care of for us.

I'm no biologist but I think it would take a longer spell to kill a large amount of the deer. We are on our place full time right now and they all looked fine this morning that I saw moving about. We are close to Gatesville and it was 3 when I got up. I noticed they had been hitting the feeders harder the last few days. They hadn't been so much last week.

could be worse out west where wind is worse temps are colder longer and no near as much cover as far as trees and whatnot.

x2, days not weeks. IMO, there won’t be any major die off. Any part of the state offers natural shelter, brush on south facing slopes, pine trees, cedar trees, etc.

I don't think you'll have a noticeable die off at all. It's not like Colorado when you have weeks upon weeks of freezing weather with feet of snow on the ground.

The deer have it easy in the south regardless of temps. I lived up north NY,NH. Maine etc. There the winter is not only long and frigid but the snows get several feet deep. Deer only survive by yarding up. grouping in herds so as to have rotating lead deer push through snow to move and find food. They are victimized by wolves, dogs and other predators who walk on crusted hard surface and kill the weak. I suspect that few here will perish just from the cold,

I just got back from cutting firewood. Deer, hog, fox and coyote tracks all around the small pond below the house. Pond is frozen. I guess they'll eat snow. Neighbor that raises high dollar deer doesn't seem too concerned. I'll just keep feeding heavy and hope for the best.

drove into town today to get milk, saw lots of whitetail up and about and a herd of axis bedded down under some cedars.

We may be over thinking this....i know Blackbucks and African species will take a hit but I think most will be fine. Supposed to get freezing rain tonite which will suck but will be 45 here tomorrow.

This storm was supposed to have hit last week so i filled up my protein feeders and put a few bags in each corn feeder.....hopefully they didn't empty the feeders prior to this, gonna go up early next week and find out.

my concern is water, hopefully the neighbors tanks have not froze as i'm 100% sure my water trough is a block of ice

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

They’ll be fine for the most part. They are hardy animals.

I'm not sure the bucks have had enough time to recover from the rut.

The neighborhood cats ate good last night. There were several birds on the ground yesterday that didn’t make it thru the night

We were just discussing our protein feeders today, and how they are likely getting hammered this week.

This cold spell we've had is just a slight bump in the road for the deer and other animals. Frozen water sources isn't a problem as they will get water from the snow and other protected areas that haven't frozen.
As mentioned, deer living in areas where feet of snow happen for long periods of time is when deer suffer, and that is because of lack of food over weeks not days.

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

We got down to -7° and stayed below freezing for about 5 days, the pond across the road froze over and ran the ducks and geese to the hot water lakes. I had a does and this years fawns at the feeder in the back yard last night. If the fawns made it, the mature deer should not have had much of a problem as we have some really thick spots for them to hunker down.

Deer will be dying for several weeks as a result of this freeze. I am seeing a few dead whitetails and many that are in extremely poor body condition. Mother Nature can be cruel but death loss seems to be worse where populations are high.
Adios,
Gary

We had 13 dead doves in the yard this morning that we’re not their yesterday so their is going to be a delayed effect I guess. They were all huddled together on the ground and they just croaked.

Our dog starting barking at 3 am last Sunday night. I got up and laying on the deck that is attached to the back of my house was this guy. He was curled up in the corner - I stuck my head out the screen door and he did not budge - warmest place he could find - was gone in the morning - hope he survived
