While some early reports indicated that frozen wind turbines were causing significant shortfalls, 30GW is roughly equal to the entire state's wind capacity if every turbine is producing all the power it's rated for. Since wind generally tends to produce less during winter, there's no way that the grid operators would have planned for getting 30GW from wind generation; in fact, a chart at ERCOT indicates that wind is producing significantly more than forecast

West Texas was the start of the problems last night..... I wonder if it was because of the windmills.

Here in Coppell (DFW area), power went off at 2:00am, came back on at 7:00pm for an hour. It's 40 degrees in the house. I have been camping in colder weather, this just seems really cold. Maybe a warmer tomorrow.

It ain't so much that ( although personal comfort does figure to a lesser degree) the
house is old and although I wrapped and re wrapped all the plumbing a long time
ago, all this off on off on off on off on off on is not good at all for the electrical
appliances in the house, and the pipes would be fine with no worries if I can
keep some half way steady heat in the house

My buddy has a dozen of them on his ranch and he just told me they all stopped last night. First time they’ve ever done it.

Why are lights on in downtown Dallas, why are street lights on, why are any lights on in office buildings?

The lights are using very little electricity compared to their heating. All those building have fire sprinkler systems that must be kept from freezing or there will be millions and millions of dollars in damages. Already quite a few issues in Temple with sprinkler systems freezing in buildings. Temple mall has already had two lines bust and pour water into the building.

You are not in a rolling black out. I'm almost certain its a power line issue.

If you've been off for 16 hours its not because of a rolling blackout. Maybe a downed line or blown transformer? We have been on for 30 mins, off for 30 mins pretty much all day. That is a rolling blackout.

Don't give an F about those office buildings. What about the potential for broken pipes in a million homes ?

Ours went out at 6:30, came back on at 8:30. Fired up the wood stove and the generator. 2 hours wasn’t bad, it was still early.

What about 1000s of people out of work and businesses going out of business because they can’t afford to fix the problems. It goes both ways. As a home owner it’s our responsibility to protect our assets as in our homes and it’s a companies job to protect their assets. At the same time it shouldn’t be an issue for any of us bc our grid should be capable of supplying us all power.

I agree, we shouldn’t be having this issue with what we all pay for electricity, I can see it now in the headlines. Due to the damage received from the cold weather we will be passing the cost of repairs on to our customers for our own stupidity even though we destroyed hundreds of millions of dollars worth of private property from our own shortcomings. We will try harder next time dead_horse

The recording may be a broad brush, if you’ve been out that long it’s a problem in the line somewhere. Why let a great excuse go to waste when you can blame it on someone else. The next time you call it might say due to the rolling black outs and a Covid 19 outbreak.

It’s been a long time since this has occurred. Times have changed. People will die tonight in their homes due the inept companies and commissions that run the power system for Texas. I predict wrongful death lawsuits by the weekend.

Read several articles yesterday that a lot of folks are without power for a prolonged period of time because generating plants have failed because of over generating

Most have failed because it is next to impossible to keep one up in these conditions. In colder climates, power plants have contingency plans for this weather. The ROI down here doesn't justify the additional investment.
