This should work, right? If you got some kinda rag inside that, then you're as good as the store-bought. Well done! And...brilliant! Can't take credit for that. Found it on the 'net. I wrapped mine with some old hand towels and Gorilla tape.

If you have a water heater in the attic and have an insulating blanket on it do you remove to let the heat from water heater warm that area? What about putting a moving blanket over the heater and pipes on an electric one?

It's a little late at this stage of things, but consider replacing your outside faucets with freeze-proof ones, if you can. Woodford Mfg. makes freeze-proof anti-siphon ones from 4" all the way to about 18-24". The actual shutoff is inside the wall, house, or foundation where it is warmer and the piping drains every time it is shut off. This is what I have. They should all be frost proof these days but maybe not on older construction. The one on my north side cracked once only because some idiot left the hose hooked up.

If you have a water heater in the attic and have an insulating blanket on it do you remove to let the heat from water heater warm that area? What about putting a moving blanket over the heater and pipes on an electric one? Heating blanket on a water heater? That's insane Just turn on your hot sides faucets and let it drip, that will take care of the water heater and the cold inlet pipe from not freezing. Let your tubs drip cold if you want.

Here's a question: I saw some "expert" on the TV news saying to let outside hose faucets drip/run slowly to prevent them from freezing, like we would for inside faucets (same principle-moving water doesn't freeze.) I've always put foam "Dolly Partons" over outside faucets and haven't had a problem, but haven't experienced temps down near zero before. Any thoughts or experience with letting the outside faucets run? Other than the skating ponds I might create? That's a longstanding practice. You just have to keep an eye on them to make sure they don't stop dripping from lower water pressure as many others take the same approach. Some just set their faucets with a little more frequent drip for that reason. Still, I would never view it as something that replaces the need for insulating pipes. I have an faucet that's on the outside of one of my exterior garage walls, meaning it gets no heat from either side. The pipes are insulated in the wall and attic above the garage, and yet I've see the faucet itself freeze up, even when covered. Now I just let it drip in severe cold.

I'm adding some Isopropyl alcohol to my 'winter formula' wiper fluid (on 5 vehicles) - just in case: I did a little test - the 'winter formula' wiper fluid they sell in Texas is rated to 0 degrees - it turned into mostly ICE in my -3 degrees freezer, as you can see: A second sample I added 10% (measured) of 91% strength Isopropyl alcohol - in freezer next to the untreated (above) sample- it stayed fully liquid: For a final test - I've lowered freezer to -8 degrees - the untreated sample is now a solid block of ice, and even the 10% is a little slushy with ice crystals. If you only got 70% Isopropyl, I'd use a 15% ratio. I know that in previous cold snaps, the (winter) wiper fluid often freezes when it hits the windshield, if it comes out at all. This should help.

Had a close call in the bathroom on the west side. Had the cabinet doors open under the sink but did not have the faucet dripping Cold water line frozen no water would come out. Grabbed the space heater pulled all of the towels out and about 10 minutes later we are good. Be sure and have all of your faucets dripping and remove towels that will block the warm air from getting to you pipes underneath the faucet.

Juice went out here at 3.45am. Hooked up Bobcat 250 EFI welder to panel with 50 amp plug. Had Electrician's hook me a panel up for emergencies off main 200 amp panel when the house was built 2 years ago. Heat came back on in house. Yee haw. Electric just came back on line 6 am. Gonna let the Bobcat run for a few mo hours just to break it in. Thing only had 6 hours on it as it's just been sitting in the barn. Coffee's on with gen set power. Oh and 7 degrees here.

Power went out at 3:30, got up and went to mechanical room to cut off water supply and drain lines. 1/4 turn pvc valve is stuck so that was fruitless. This is really bad. Not supposed to get above freezing until saturday.

If you have candles, burn them. Yankee Candles are in glass containers and burn efficiently. I have the 12 Aromas of Christmas every room a different aroma sensation. I told the wife we've had these candles for a decade or more, time for some new candles. The large 3 wick candles seem to be less effective than the 2 wick jar candles. Different wax maybe

Snow is melting where the sun hits it. I'll head out later, and shovel a path or 5 so the dog can take care of biz on frozen grass.

I forgot sand and salt. Can't even get out of my driveway because of ice under the snow. Going to be even worse the next 3 days unless we get more snow and no sun.

The wife and I have been very blessed so far. Power has remained on so we've been able to keep the house warm. It'll be a long night keeping an eye on all the outside faucets to make sure they don't stop dripping. I'll set them to a slow trickle if necessary since water costs far less that home repairs after water damage. The backup generator is sitting on the back patio and there's 15 gallons of gas in the shed. Hopefully, it won't take starting fluid to get her to fire up if the power goes out.
A lot of people are no doubt going to be picking up the pieces once the temperature stays above freezing long enough for pipes to thaw out. Plumbers are sure to make a mint across the state in the next few weeks. I see questions from 20 something's on social media that leave me scratching my head as to how so many of them were never taught basic knowledge about the utilities in their home.

I have been starting our vehicles every morning and afternoon and letting them run for about 10 minutes to keep the battery charged and hopefully the fluids moving
