Burned most of my wood over Christmas even though we didn’t need it. Had to go get another rick on Saturday guessing it was very fresh cut and split Oak. I normally just use fire starter logs and the fire is roaring in a couple of minutes. I’ve been having hell the last couple days starting the fire. Nothing I do seems to work. Have started fresh several times by putting packing paper with kindling in the center and building my logs around it in a Lincoln log pattern with plenty of air flow. Takes a long time for it to catch and when it does it barely burns. This morning I got my garden torch I use to buy wood for wood working. Torched the hell out of it and even though that got it started faster it’s still not a roaring fire like it was with my last batch a wood that was well seasoned that I split myself.

Does anyone have any tips or tricks to make it burn better? If electric goes out my little family will be spending most the time in front of the fire and as of right now we might freeze lol.

This was a picture of the first fire I built on Saturday. Since I got a pretty good bed or coals not it’s a bit easier.

Try a small hand held blower if you have one, or even a hair dryer.

Lol I did use some lighter fluid let it soak in. As soon as it burnt off the fire went out.

I blow on it and it’ll stoke it for a minute but it dies back out.

I use the egg lighter on green wood all the time, it’s the only way I can get it to get going. Or use a ton of dried kindling, green wood sucks but sometimes we have to use what’s available

I have some dried 2x4’s in my garage that I cut down this morning and put them on the bottom with the torch it caught on pretty good until they burned out.

You might want to get your chimney cleaned If you end up burning a lot of the green wood.

Remember when you are using a regular open fireplace to heat with, it's going up the chimney. Any gaps and open drafty spaces?, you are sucking cold outside air into the house.

Hahah I waited 2 days until I tried it but I was getting pissed. Burned every amazon box I had in the house with kindling to get it started I was out of ideas lol.

My wife said the same thing though. You sure you want to use that in the house? I said oh it’ll be fine.

I have gotten wood like that which just didn’t burn well. Probably too green and not dried out like you suggested.

Not much you can do other than let it age or just add one piece at a time to keep the heat going and dry out the one piece. But if you do lose power it could be a life saver.

That’s pretty much what I’m doing. Normally I’d wait to add the wood but I add it sooner so the fire can help dry it a bit until it actually catches fire.

Split it again and dry/pre-heat in your oven.

We had no power over here this morning. We have a gas insert and it was a life saver this morning.

If it's that green then you're going to have to keep a bed of hot coals for the duration. It will burn, but it needs the heat to dry it out.

Try charcoal for a bed of coals.

Conventional fireplaces are pretty useless for heat....the warmed air goes up the chimney. You need an insert or a wood stove. There are not many BTU's in green wood. You need to go find some seasoned wood.

Try stacking some close to the fire now that you’ve got it going. Hopefully it will dry it out a little.

If you're ever in my neck of the woods, I will load you up with all the cured split oak wood you want. Burns real good.
