Hmmm
I never knew that refrigerators and freezers had thermostats on the outside

No it’s on the inside, guess when the outside air gets close to the same temp as the air inside the fridge that’s when it has trouble

I checked mine, they are working fine, but the garage is 48 degrees.

That's what I'm saying. If your freezer is below freezing and the ambient air is below freezing; how is anything thawing out?

That would be my thought, too. If it’s cold enough to trigger the freezer to shut off, it’s cold enough to just let nature takeover and open the door after unplugging the freezer.

"Y’all need to go check your garage freezers. They aren’t made to run in this weather. They don’t realize that they should be kicking on due to the climate being so cold. Mine, and a few others have started to thaw what’s inside."

I don’t know how this works or why this happens. But I put a space heater bell near them and they kicked back on.

I’m just going to believe it’s voodoo

Mine is still working. If it wasn't I'd just open the door since it's 8° here at the house.

BP is RIGHT. Just checked mine. Same thing was happening. Adjusted thermostat and it kicked back on.

Good advice....went and checked mine as well and it wasn't cooling, but everything still frozen. 45 degrees in my garage according to the temp gauge on my garage door opener.

This was the inside of one of the outdoor fridges in Junction; got so cold outside that the cokes in the fridge froze and exploded. I'm still not sure how meat would thaw in a non-working freezer inside of a freezing garage.

I had this happen too- but I wasn't going to be the first to say anything, obviously. It's hard enough appearing sane as it is. My 18 year old Frigidaire in the garage- noticed first the frozen blackberries weren't solid but loose and it felt warmer after a couple of solid cold days. Refrigerator part was maybe colder than normal. I didn't come up with any good guesses why, but the voices in my head suggested I move some stuff into the inside freezer. Weird.

I did the same. I keep mine below zero and adjust for outside temp. I have to do the same for my mini beer fridge in the laundry room. If I keep it at a summer setting in winter it will freeze beer. I bought my garage freezer at Montgomery Wards. That ought to tell the oldsters on here how old it is. It is a manual defrost which is the way to go if you want them to last.

The one in the back is a Diet Coke, the fridge next to this one had a single coke zero and a bunch kf canned beer. The coke zero was the only one to bust.

Freezers ....

Obviously when ambient exceeds 100 degrees 50% of the day, the refrgeration system cannot reject enough heat to maintain 0 degrees.
Conversely, when the ambient fall below 40 degrees, the condenser,( high pressure side) refrigerant pressure drops as well. The refrigeration process relys on pressure difference between both refrigeration coils to cause heat exchange.
Pressure and temperature follow a consecutive curve. No pressure difference, no refrigeration.

Refrigerators.....
The on/off control ( operating thermostat) is located in the refrigerator section. Indusrty standards for fresh food storage is 38 to 40 degrees. When the ambient fall below 40 degrees, there is no heat load to cause a call for cooling. Without run time, the freezer temps rise to ambient.

Both are designed to function in 60 to 90 average ambient. By adding space heater to either, we simply fool the the system into believing the ambient is above 60 degrees.
