Its that time of year!
Who's putting in for draws?
I'm gonna buy points for several states. Only thing I'm gonna try and draw is Elk in New Mexico. 2022 I'll see if I can draw a Tag in Wyoming for Mule deer.
I have finally admitted to myself, due to point creep and the overwhelming number of people hunting western states ( thanks to the internet and shows like MeatEater and Randy Newberg) that if i want to hunt out west every year I'm gonna have to pay for it thru landowner tags/outfitters. Hopefully my Mule Deer spot which is currently OTC for Elk becomes a draw only unit so hunter numbers will be down, they have increased considerably the past several years.
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

As usual, I’m putting in for sheep in every state except where it’s basically impossible for a NR to draw. This year I also put in for WY elk for the first time in years. I’ve got 9 points going in which gives me about a 50/50 chance of drawing the Area I put in for in the NR Special drawing.
I learned long ago you can't reason someone out of something they don't reason themselves into.

I put in for 8 western states. I usually draw something. It’s expensive and it seems like the point creep is getting worse every year.

I put in for 10 states and have a bunch of points for multiple species.
With that said most the tine I'm hunting OTC or second/third choice tags.
Your Meateaters and newbergs hunt a lot of second choice and otc tags while rebuilding points. I know I ran into them and helped them out.
Just have to do your research.

I think if you stagger your apps you can hunt out west every year but maybe not the best areas. In Wyoming we still have some 0-1 PP deer regions to draw and they have good bucks, general elk is a 3 PP game now it looks like but some random tags to draw, pronghorn seem to still have a few leftovers every year but they are hard access areas. Colorado has OTC but I wonder if that may change in the near future. I'm burning my Colorado deer PP on an area close to the state line for ease of hunting. In Wyoming we have to draw our pronghorn tags, pretty good odds for our preferred area and no PP for residents so all random draw. We'll also be applying for LQ license in an area that takes about 9 NR PP for you all to draw. Good bulls and plenty of public to hunt into Nov. when they come down for winter. Fun archery hunting last 2 weeks in Sept on same tag. If we don't draw we 'll buy a general license on and go hunt our NF spots.

Usual states and tag applications. AZ, then UT, NM, KS in April, WY in May, AZ again in June. Finally Idaho, with my regular OTC hunts for the last hoorah!

I’m guessing you put in for supers in Idaho and not limited elk/mule deer? I thought about putting switch it up this year from a super to limited elk. With NM about to can NR odds even worse I may just give it one last shot on super then go to elk.

The Super Tags, and Super Combo are about like the PowerBall lottery (terrible odds), but I have friends who have drawn one, or even several of them. It is a worthwhile contribution for the ACCESS YES program, so I always buy a couple chances, and consider it a donation more than anything. Just imagine, to have the entire state to hunt, for every season. The wife would never see me!!
I have drawn sheep, mt. goat, and moose here so I do put in for deer/elk/antelope every year but look more for extra opportunity or meat tags (extra whitetail, late cow elk, muzzy antelope). I can hunt deer and elk just 20 minutes from the house here OTC, so general tags are always a back-up.

what is NM doing to Non-Res now? Giving res an additional 6% of tags and combining outfitter with NR. Also trying to cut out unit wide vouchers. So most units those tags would 100% go to RES pool. 90/10 spilt

They can't do math and don't understand all the OF pool is NR’s also. So NF applications pool just went up 50% to 100% in a lot of units.

I think all states especially Texas should make anyone applying for a drawn hunt purchase a non refundable license before applying for a draw. I’ve heard some places do.

Not comparable to out of state draw hunts in the West.

Not comparable to out of state draw hunts in the West. I don’t give a shat about out west being better than Texas that wasn’t part of my question. Some of us don’t care to kill an Elk or goats and many of us are plenty happy to kill Giant mule deer right here in Texas. Lots of great drawn hunts in Texas for native species and some good ones for exotics. I’ve seen plenty people from out of state asking about our draw hunts and met a few at Chapperal while hunting Javelina. My question was do some of the states refund you your license money if you are not drawn? Only reason I’m asking is because that’s what someone told me and i was curious. Thanks BOBO for reading and answering my question.

None of the states refund your hunting license fees anymore. Wyoming doesn’t require a hunting license to apply. But you have to front the tag fees to apply. Literally every other state I apply for (12-13 per year) the hunting license fee is nonrefundable.

New Mexico gave you that option up until a few years ago.
