I had never heard of big surface to surface rockets being used in Vietnam. What sort of targets were they used against?

Prob used just like any other artillery just works at longer distances. Troops in the open, terrain denial, blow up a rice field whatever you want.

The only missiles I know of were the air to ground, used by choppers, and other aircraft. We had artillery on every possible fire base, major LZ etc.. I never saw any missile units, in I Corp, II Corp or III Corp, only one left is IV Corp, and it was in the Delta, I doubt if those rigs would want to operate in that terrain.

Most all of the SAM's were used in N.VietNam . They were Russian made, maybe 7,500 of them , used by Russians in N.VN, to protect Hanoi from being bombed by the US . Over 5,000 were fired and over 3,000 US aircraft were shot down.
