Never shipped a rifle before so hoping y’all can help me out.
Can I mail a long gun to another Texas resident directly or does it have to go through an FFL?

Don't take to UPS, i got read the riot act a few weeks ago when i tried to use them. Said that i had to fill out a bunch of forms and had to have a ffl address where i was shipping it to. This was at the main ups center in ft worth. I tried to explain several times that it was a long gun and could go direct to an individual in Texas. She said i don't care what you say, it has to go to a ffl. I said fine and left. Went a few blocks over and sent it USPS.

Well..."buyer beware" when using USPS. Tracking is antiquated and your package may take forever to arrive or may not arrive at all. There's a trade off.

I've used UPS several times in the last 6 months with zero issues. I go to the UPS store and not main UPS drop off.

UPS has always been easy and non-confrontational. Might not be the cheapest but..... I prefer them over USPS.

List time I mailed one I sent it usps.
Guy behind the counter: "what is it?" "Its a rifle." "Is it loaded?" Nope, and the bolt is out of it." "Ok"
I tend to use USPS for most stuff.
The secret to a long life is to try not to shorten it.

USPS via Registered Mail Insured. It will take a few extra day because everyone who handles the package must sign for it. Tracking is authoritative.
They are not allowed to ask the contents and you don't have to tell them.

They are not allowed to ask the contents and you don't have to tell them. Not exactly correct... USPS - 432.3 Rifles and Shotguns 432.3 Rifles and Shotguns Except under 431.2, unloaded rifles and shotguns are mailable. Mailers must comply with the rules and regulations under 27 CFR, Part 478, as well as state and local laws. The mailer may be required by the USPS to establish, by opening the parcel or by written certification, that the rifle or shotgun is unloaded and not ineligible for mailing. The following conditions also apply: Subject to state, territory, or district regulations, rifles and shotguns may be mailed without restriction when intended for delivery within the same state of mailing. These items must: Bear a “Return Service Requested” endorsement. Be mailed using a class of mail, product, or Extra Service that provides tracking and signature capture at delivery. A rifle or shotgun owned by a non-FFL may be mailed outside the owner‘s state of residence by the owner to himself or herself, in care of another person in the other state where he or she intends to hunt or engage in any other lawful activity. These mailpieces must: Be addressed to the owner. Include the “in the care of” endorsement immediately preceding the name of the applicable temporary custodian. Be opened by the rifle or shotgun owner only. Be mailed using a class of mail, product, or Extra Service that provides tracking and signature capture at delivery. Mailing of rifles and shotguns between licensed FFL dealers, manufacturers, or importers are not restricted. The Postal Service recommends that these items be mailed using a class of mail, product, or Extra Service that provides tracking and signature capture at delivery. Rifles and shotguns may be mailed by a non-FFL owner domestically to a FFL dealer, manufacturer, or importer in any state. These items must be mailed using a class of mail, product, or Extra Service that provides tracking and signature capture at delivery. Except as described in 432.3a, licensed curio and relic collectors may mail firearms meeting the definition of curios or relics under 27 CFR 478.11 domestically to licensed FFL curio and relic collectors in any state. These items must be mailed using a class of mail, product, or Extra Service that provides tracking and signature capture at delivery. Firearms meeting the definition of a rifle or shotgun under 431.4 which are certified by the curator of a municipal, state, or federal museum, which exhibits firearms to be curios or relics of museum interest, may be accepted for mailing without restriction when mailed between governmental museums. Air guns (see 431.6) that do not fall within the definition of firearms under 431.1a are mailable. A shipment containing an air gun with a muzzle velocity of 400 or more feet per second (fps) must include an adult signature service under DMM 503.8. Mailers must additionally comply with all applicable state and local regulations.

The Local UPS stores in Burleson and Ft Worth ask what is in the box, if you say gun, i have had them refuse it. I was actually told if it is anything firearm related, they refuse it. Must be a bunch of leftest people in those locations. I shipped a couple of barrels but told them it was metal pipe in them.

When I was in the biz I had the USPS reg printed and in hand every time I used the USPS. I never dealt with the counter clerks. If they made an issue out of then I went straight to the HMFIC. Having information "In hand" helped them make an informed decision. It worked every time.

I know a guy that did that...once. Kind of sucked for him when FedEx lost his shipment and he went to file an insurance claim for a lost "gun". Claim Denied!

If you have having problems with UPS, just schedule a pickup. UPS driver will pick it up from you and scan it in, they don't seem to ask any questions.
