Prayers out for those folks up North today. Makes me sick to my stomach to even think about.

I rarely drive in DFW but I do drive a ton between Round Rock down to the valley and west Texas.
I spend more hours behind the windshield than most and I can’t believe more folks aren’t killed on I-35 every day.
The big rigs ARE a problem. We all have our thoughts, but mine are as follows.
1. Them dudes don’t get to do 70-80 mph down the road. That’s just too damn fast for the stopping distance.
2. They should not be able to drive in major cities during rush hour

I certainly don’t want to tell another man how to do his job, but if I was a commercial driver I would NOT want to be anywhere near Austin, SA or DFW except after 8PM.

There are definitely some good truck drivers out there but most these days are time crunched, selfish A-holes. They cause or are involved in almost every wreck or traffic jam I see. Again, there are some good ones.
When do TXDOT and DPS bear some of this responsibility? (Sh!t traffic patterns and 18 wheelers not getting pulled over for speeding or aggressive driving)

There was also a 26 car pile up in N. Austin’s today. No big rigs involved I think.

But you just said they needed to be banned from the city because they are a problem

Both valid points.
My company decided to give us off through Monday with pay. Just not worth the risk I guess. I imagine there will be some lawsuits.
I’m not trying to be a hypocrite because I make my living driving up and down 35 but seeing that Fed Ex driver plow into everyone doing 70 on a morning like this just makes me think.
How is it that 35 is bumper to bumper from DFW to Laredo and isn’t 6 lanes each direction?
Of course money is the answer.

Keeping them out of the left lane...or left two lanes if there are four, would help. Or if two lanes....right lane only.

And not allowed in Express lanes.

They need to make a living, but there should be some rules.

cant blame all for one but a couple months back out in the country I took one of those short country entrance ramps. Big rig ran me off the road. No one else on the road.

I agree with this but the way everyday drivers get on and off the HWY would make that a problem. Plus that would be a dang convoy of trucks, bumper to bumper all the way to Laredo.
How many of y’all have seen the amount of big rigs from S. San Antonio to Laredo? That’s were every single one is headed.
It’s mind blowing.

There are hundreds if not thousands of super sized distribution centers in the DFW area, most products come in by rail, but thousands of trailers move that stuff everyday. Shutting down truck travel even for a short time each day would require a lot more trucks on the road during the allotted hours. That is trading one cluster for another cluster, with the latter being worse than the former method.

When I worked for Dal Tile we ran 50+ loads a day out of Laredo north. That is one company. I live off 30 and some days on my commute there were more trucks then 4 wheelers.

I drive to Laredo and back 3 times a month. Now that oil is slower, WAY more rigs than 4 wheelers.

Wife and I try to stay off I-35 as much as we can. We really do call it ‘the highway of death’.

I do the same. NW Austin is always through Wimberly through Lakeway.
NE Austin is always the toll road.

Corpus and the valley is always I-10 in Marion to 1604 to 37S.

This sounds like a big rig bash maybe, but everyday drivers are way worse. Just smaller and lighter.

285 from Pecos to Carlsbad is the deadliest.

There are lots of idiot and careless truck drivers but there are also plenty that are safe and know what they are doing. Putting any kind of additional regulations on all trucks is about the same thing as adding regulations on guns because of the actions of a few. Yes when an 18 wheeler crashes it is devastating and makes the news but with the numbers of them on the highways it is a very small percentage. I don’t drive a truck for a living but I own one and drive it five or so days per month.

Plenty of time behind a rig and I could say the same the other direction. The carelessness of most drivers in this state is unreal. They don’t care about big trucks. They will pull out in front of you. Cut you off and so forth. And there are already plenty of laws on the books for truck drivers. It’s not a big car vs small car problem. It’s a people problem which is what’s going to [censored] in this country. More laws arnt the answer.

Not clueless at all. It’s definitely not just a big rig problem. It is a people problem.
There are way more idiots driving their personal cars on the HWY than truckers, with zero respect for anyone else.
And anytime you get the government involved it never works out well. (More rules and regulations)
Just stating that I-35 always has the potential to see what we saw yesterday.
