Has anyone tried it? If so, how much did you reduce powder charge before working back up watching for pressure? Did you use a chronograph to monitor and not exceed velocities of an established load with small pistol primers? Did you see an increase in velocity? How did it impact ES? I thought this might be an interesting discussion in these times of component shortages.... Disclaimer: I am in no way advocating anyone load without published data.

Yes I have been doing it for a while. I’m about 5-7% less. I just load 500 Rds of 9mm with srp and 3.7 gr of Titegroup and 115gr Hornady FMJ.

Jorge, I have dabbled with it in the past with 357 magnum. I gained about 30 fps over the same powder charge but the ES was actually tighter. In an unrelated comment: I was doing a lot of work with the chronograph until I somehow shot the chronograph with the pistol.... FUBAR

Pistols I don’t chrono. I’m not that into them and I’m at best an average shot with one. I have noticed a trend with rifles when using srp magnum primers es and sd normally improve.

Just load them.
If you're super worried about it, back the charge off 10% to start with.

If you're super worried about it, back the charge off 10% to start with. I wanted to see for myself what difference it made in my loads, so I worked it out. I was loading 170’s to shoot silhouettes at 200 yards with a pistol. That was some time ago. With primers as hard to find as they currently are, I suspected there are several considering using them through this shortage.

As read on another forum I remember reading that CCI magnum pistol primers were the same as CCI small rifle primers. I did a search and this is what popped up.
NOTE 1: According to Speer/CCI Technical Services - Both the CCI 550 Small Pistol Magnum and CCI 400 Small Rifle primers are identical in size. Both primers use the same cup metal and share the same cup thickness. Both primers use the same primer compound formula and same amount of primer compound.Feb 21, 2013 Wonder what a call to Speer/CCI would turn up now?

If they ever come available again, I'll probably only buy SRP for everything that doesn't take a large primer.

Only issue you might run into, depending upon brand, is the cup being too hard for striker fired pistols with aftermarket components

Does anyone have any info about substituting regular small pistol primers (not small pistol magnum) in place of small rifle primers? These would be fairly mild .223 loads for AR15.

Problems I could see with that direction is the non magnum SPP is the pressure even with mild loads in the 223 you are most likely talking 50k psi which is well above the pressure of most handgun use. That would be for the same basic reason Remington 6 1/3 primers made for small rifle cartridges think 25-20, 22 Hornet... ones with little case volume and pressure. You might get primer flow or piercing with the thinner/softer primer cups. Not saying you would but it is a possibility.

Helpful thread.
I've got some .50 Beowulf to load. It calls for a small pistol magnum primer. I was thinking, surely a small rifle primer will work. Evidently my thinking was correct, according to y'all.

Ive got more primers for 9mm than i need and fewer for 223 than i want lol

You may puncture the cup of the primer if you use a Small Pistol in a .223 (the Small rifles have a slightly thicker cup)
If you use a Small rifle in a pistol, you may not have enough force in a striker gun to set it off, you may have to double strike them.

Thank you for sharing that video with us Cowboy. It contained some timely data I think a lot of us wonder about and may find reassuring. Particularly the pressure testing. Good stuff.

Does anyone have any info about substituting regular small pistol primers (not small pistol magnum) in place of small rifle primers? These would be fairly mild .223 loads for AR15. I've done it and it works. I keep the loads at book minimum. In some cases, there is an ignition delay of a few milliseconds and < 1% failure to fire. Compare this to when we use rifle primers in ARs and failures to fire are < 0.1%.
