I was duck hunting with a guy on Caddo lake and the lake had frozen over.
We left Johnson's Landing before daylight in a john boat moving real slow so ice wouldn't rip the hull.
Even so our tiny wake caused large blocks of ice to collide with a deep resounding Booooom.......Booooom.
That was one of many memorable hunts on I had on that lake.

I may be off a little on the year, winters seemed to be colder when I was a kid but 83 would have been about the right time. Grew up south of Wichita Falls, we didn't have central heat and our house was pier and beam. Me and my brother shared a room and a full sized bed. We literally spooned because it was that damn cold and there would be ice on the inside of the windows when we woke up. Hop out of bed in the morning to go to school and haul [censored] to the dining room where Dad would have the wood stove going to heat up. Go chop hole in the tank so calves could drink and haul water out of the house to the chickens. Not sure how many miles I walked following his truck and and a homemade pickup bed trailer tossing dead mesquite stumps and pieces in. We didn't need a chainsaw for most of it.
Everything froze, Lake Arrowhead and all our tanks. We played cow hockey hockey where we'd team up and kick frozen cow [censored] around the tank. It was cold, really cold.
Cold weather clothes? We wore our regular stuff with long johns underneath. My kids say that I don't feel cold, its not true and I'm not that tough. I do like to say them though - "heck, I've been cold - this ain't cold" That is the truth when it comes to winter around here these days . That's fine, keep the cold [censored] up north, I'll take 100 plus degrees over it any day of the week.
Shoot. Eat. Repeat.

I recall us having a heat pump in our home at that time, undersized unit built during the Carter administration for energy savings. The inside of our house was hovering around 38° F and the heater was running non-stop off the heat strips. We were dirt poor since we spent pretty much everything we had on the down payment earlier that year and my parents loaned us enough money to buy an Earth Stove brand fireplace insert that my dad brought to us. He and I installed it and fired that baby up, living room/dining room/kitchen warmed up to about 80° but the bedrooms remained in the 40° range for days. We slept in the living room during that cold snap. I also remember my college roommate and i had a leave in NW Williamson county and filled the last of our doe tags (4) as that cold front blew in. We decided to hang the deer in my carport since it was so dang cold. The next morning they were frozen solid and it took several days to thaw by putting in the garage with an electric space heater before I could skin & quarter them. Of course my roommate wasn't available then, so I got to process all 4 by myself.
I remember a harder cold spell around Christmas in '89 when I found out that a diesel was useless without treated fuel. I remember the one in 89 much better. I was a Sophomore in HS in 89 and remember getting 4 days off from school. Buddies and I spent days in the mall parking lot doing donuts.

It was 0° here on Christmas morning. Had to chop ice on stock tanks with an axe. Rode 3-wheelers on the stock tanks.

Pulling 12-16 hour shifts working outside at a refinery in Abilene. It was cold on the ground, it was $^#! cold 130ft up on a tower. Same for me but in a chemical plant in Longview, Tx. Two weeks of free food in the company cafeteria, made lots of money on overtime. The dang towers all froze up, had to steam trace the steam tracing. We even attached steam hoses to the point sections on the cranes and they went up and down the columns trying to thaw them out.

Best I can remember he started there mid to late 80s.

Probably with my high school girl friend in her white 65 mustang, just laying in between the bucket seats.

8th grade, Mills county. We had just moved there in August from the coast. Three days running the lows were 2, 5, and 8. It broke every pipe in our house. By the time we called the only area plumber, he was six weeks out. Had to carry buckets from the well house 50yds to the house to bathe and cook.

Anything that could freeze pretty much did. I got called out for relief on the second day and ended up staying for about 5-6 days straight.

My son was just over a month old and we were contemplating going out of town for the holidays and I went to look out the front window to see how bad the roads were only to find that they were bone dry. What? There was no overnight warm front and the road was icy the day before. What happened?
The weatherman later that evening explained that it was so cold that the roads literally freeze dried during the night. I couldn’t believe it. Crazy stuff.

Fixing broke heaters. Trying to pay for Christmas. Thankful I had work. On a humerous note. Took my wife's car to bring my grandmother to stay with us through cold snap. Road were a starting to get slick, so I buckeled the seat belt, this was before the seat belt laws. Well, there was a dime in the buckle and it would not unlatch. Had cut it with my pocket knife. Of course I had replace it to pass inspection.

If the 2nd amendment was written just to include guns for hunting, why is there not an amendment to protect fishing poles?

I was snowed in just north of Durant OK at my grandparents ranch. I was little but I do remember the snow being piled up on the north door 3 to 4 feet. I have a picture somewhere of my grandmother and I digging in the snow to make snow cream.

ARE YALL SERIOUS? You really remember for sure which event? I remember some weather like that but im not positive the year. My weather memories are always of hunting it seems. I remember pulling into gas station in Sheffield while going to hunt our longtime lease south of Bakersfield. The Longhorn A&M game was on the teeny TV in there and the Aggies just kicked off and Texas fumbled the kickoff in the snow(what year was that). Another trip about that year going to Ft Stockton again in my S10 going through that curve just outside on London there was ice and I remember that S10 was almost out of control all the way through it. Later that weekend I killed a buck when I was so covered in ice and that buck had ice all over him. A different year but we were the first to ever hunt the Buckle L(I was told) in about 92 and it got into single digits and we were in tents. I remember well, it was Thanksgiving Day, and I drove from ETx to Albany and then on up to the lower Panhandle and it was a massive ice storm on the roads the entire way. Sane people were not on the road that day but our whole group came in from all over.

I vaguely (I think so anyways) the 83 deal. But it's probably pictures. We were living in royse city had a little white dog that the snow was taller than it was. I remember it bouncing through nthe snow.
The 89 deal we were living in rockwall. I remember my stepdad picking someone up that was stranded on 30 bridge and them staying at our house for a night until someone came and got them.

Winter '73-"74 snow/ice storm in Dallas: Three days no school. My family had real sleds so we didn't have to use trashcan lids or cardboard. Spring '79 Wichita Falls tornado: Junior in HS we sat in English class watching the weather blow through Hot as Hell Summer '80: I had just graduated HS. One of my buddies was from Wisconsin and he didn't know it could be that hot for that long. December '83 storm: see my earlier post.

Senior in high school in 83 and remember lake o the pines freezing over and never got above freezing for quiet a few days. Also a lot of the squirrels we killed that fall had a layer of fat on them and have never seen that again. Also coon hunted with a guy that had some really good dogs and dur ing that cold snap dogs never struck a trail we think they hibernated dur ing that cold snap.
