Went for a ride on Benbrook Lake in a friend's CJ-7. We had a box of flares with us, so we lit them and flung them across the ice to see how far they would slide. As they burned they would melt the ice and drop into the Lake.

Ski bumming in Winter Park. I used to wake up every morning before sun up, chop wood and build a fire for the ski lodge I worked for. Some mornings it would be 40 below, we had a thermometer right by the wood pile, and I was always interested to see how cold it was, seems like once it got 20 below, it felt the same as 40 below, it was just F'n cold. My mom and her crazy friends, they had flights booked to come see me for Christmas, well their flights were canceled because of the weather. But that did not stop them, they took Amtrak, they had to go all the way to MI, then Denver, and the train goes all the way to Winter Park. Pretty cool, I always wanted to make that train ride into Winter Park.

I recall us having a heat pump in our home at that time, undersized unit built during the Carter administration for energy savings. The inside of our house was hovering around 38° F and the heater was running non-stop off the heat strips. We were dirt poor since we spent pretty much everything we had on the down payment earlier that year and my parents loaned us enough money to buy an Earth Stove brand fireplace insert that my dad brought to us. He and I installed it and fired that baby up, living room/dining room/kitchen warmed up to about 80° but the bedrooms remained in the 40° range for days. We slept in the living room during that cold snap. I also remember my college roommate and i had a leave in NW Williamson county and filled the last of our doe tags (4) as that cold front blew in. We decided to hang the deer in my carport since it was so dang cold. The next morning they were frozen solid and it took several days to thaw by putting in the garage with an electric space heater before I could skin & quarter them. Of course my roommate wasn't available then, so I got to process all 4 by myself.

I remember a harder cold spell around Christmas in '89 when I found out that a diesel was useless without treated fuel.

I remember it well. I was 6 yrs old and at home in Aransas Pass. I caught ice chests full of big speckled trout in the harbor on rod & reel (yes all legal limits), and watched a bunch of folks idle around the harbor in their boats scooping up dead fish to take home. That freeze killed a lot of fish. You can’t do that anymore. TP&W shuts all the harbors down to all fishing during a freeze now. There ain’t no scooping up frozen fish either, that’s against the law. So they all go to waste.

I was almost 4 and very vividly remember chunking rocks on Lake Pat Cleburne and the sound they made as their impact echoed through the ice. Perhaps and hopefully my almost 3 year old will get to hear AND remember that same sound when my dad and I take him to go chunk rocks on Kirby or Phantom later this week.

I was quail hunting on a pasture near Port Lavaca. We got too cold to hunt. I picked Cocoa and Cookie up and headed for the domino joint. The pilings on the causeway were coated with ice.

I remember the 1980 heat but honestly the 1983 cold did not stick in my memory banks except for remembering 2 days it got below zero. Or maybe that was 1989??

It was cold as heck early in December of 1989... on one Saturday the first week of December then the following Saturday. Lost electricity both mornings for 4-6 hrs. I had just moved up to the Hill Country to manage a ranch and it was 10 degrees the first Saturday am....then 0 the next Saturday am. It did get above freezing within a couple of days after each Saturday was the big difference compared to 83. We had water pipes freeze up the first go round but was better prepared the second one and nothing froze. Only had one busted 2" pipe into a water storage tank at the house and maybe one 3/4" water trough fill pipe...all were galvanized. Next week I had things insulated or drained better.

Remember it well. Went through fishing withdrawal with all of the lakes froze over. Finally broke down and made the drive down to Bastrop just to get in some boat time.

had been living in durango colorado for about 2.5 yrs. in 83, comfort before that. pretty major climate change at first but got used to it pretty quick.

temps. this time of yr. probably were 0-10 at night and maybe hit freezing or just above by lunch but that didn't last more than an hr. or so then headed back to 0.

I lived in the Glen Lakes apartment at Walnut Hill and Central (75)1st floor on the lake. I remember the lake froze over solid and I mean a thick layer of ice, the eerie noises the ice would make like whales when they communicate.
There was this knuckle head that walked on the ice all of the way across the lake.

I was a member of Arctic "Alpha" Company at The Basic School for Marine officers in Quantico Virginia. I remember running in the snow from our Barracks to the FBI academy and back with it blowing about 20 mph- I don't remember the exact distance but thought it was around a 15 mile round trip. I remember crossing running creeks/streams that were 2-3 feet high at night with full combat gear-it was cold. Myself and one of my foxhole mates were so cold we put on our full MOPP/NBC gear-I put my mask on and my partner did not put his mask on-all of a sudden he starts puking and his eyes watering. We actually got gassed-sure glad I had my mask on! During our 3 day War even the SgtMajor was treated for hypothermia. It was cold in Virginia that year.

I’m pretty sure I was thinking of ‘89 now.

I was living in a condo near Forest and Abrams at the time, yeah, I know. Crummy area now but back then it was 'high cotton'. Pipes froze and burst flooding the place. Had to move home with Mom and Dad for a while. I remember duck hunting the Paluxy river and having green heads sliding on the ice as they landed. If you know where 'Tres rios' is, that's where we used to hunt. Ice was 4-5" thick and we walked across the river.
