All the talk about the weather coming and comparisons to 1983, so curious who remembers that event. I'll start...
Was a Sophomore in college and was invited to hunt with friends on the family ranch located just outside of Evant. I had told my mom I would come home before my birthday, so departed the ranch in my Trans Am mid-afternoon. It was cool, but not frigid. It started raining lightly about the time I got to Hamilton, and as I drove into Hico I tapped the brakes to slow down entering town and realized I was on a solid sheet of ice and the TA was terrible for traction. I slid through Hico and limped up to Glen Rose, then over to 35. I don't think I got above 25 mph up through FW and beyond. l reached Gainesville and the interstate was shut down for a while and mostly impassible, but I was young and bullheaded, so I kept motoring past dozen of cars that had slid off the road.
As I approached Ardmore, the ice had turned to snow and the road was better. I limped into Ada around 7 AM. The normal 6 hour drive had taken me about 17 or so hours. Once home, we were shut in for nearly two weeks with temps in single digits. Those were the days before cell phones, so no one ne really knew I was on the road or to be worried, but it taught me valuable lessons

During the deep freeze of ’83, Dallas/Fort Worth Airport recorded 295 hours of below-freezing temperatures. Eagle Mountain Lake and Lake Worth both froze over, and Fort Worth coughed up $1.5 million just to repair frozen waterlines. And I personally walked all the way across Lake Worth. Yes, I walked on water.

I remember being asked to drive one of my lady coworkers home from the office on the north side of Houston. She was afraid to drive, whereas I was afraid of nothing (aka stoopid). I got her home and turned back to go to down this residential street that T’d into Spring Cypress Road. About 150 yards or so from the T, I touched the brakes. Nuthin happened. I pumped the brakes. Nuthin happened. I was apparently on black ice. I couldn’t stop the car or turn it, and I slid right into the major cross street. And nobody hit me. Man, was I butt-puckered.

Working a job in Dallas, living in Grand Prairie.
That was something. Busted pipes every where. Frozen lakes and creeks. Did not climb above freezing for days.
And don't forget in 1980 we had 69 days in a row over 100. Texas can be a land of weather extremes.
welcome to Texas y'all.

Living in Houston and headed to Katy at 4:00 in the morning to goose hunt on black ice. We had the road, lease, and all the geese to ourselves.

It started when I was at SFA. On Tue I got a phone call that my Grandfather, Mom's Dad, had died from brain cancer.in Dallas and the funeral would be in Peoria, IL. Wed I had to take my last two Finals. I had planned to stick around a few days but plans change. Loaded my car with just what I needed then the car wouldn't start. Campus PD had to give me a jump. Car died in Kilgore. A Fraternity brother lived in Kilgore and he got a buddy to push my car over to his parents house where I left it and my brother gave me a ride to Longview to get a bus to Dallas. My older brother, older sister and I drove to Joplin, MO to meet up with my younger sister who had been at U of Ark. and we drove the rest of the way to Peoria. It was so cold that we had to leave cars running in the driveway. The day of the funeral was the coldest temp ever recorded in Peoria history,
Got back to Dallas a couple days later and still had to wait a couple more days before I could go get my car in Kilgore.
Got my grades and I was 0.06 points below the GPA cut. Drove to Nac and talked to the Dean but she wouldn't budge (turns out similar fates happened to a couple hundred people that semester).

On Friday our annual Vietnam Tet reunion was that weekend. I hooked up to my BBQ pit trailer and started out for the fairgrounds. As I crossed over a bridge the pickup started sliding siding ways, and then started going backwards. I was headed east, but by the time I stopped I was headed west. Nothing hit, nothing damaged, I was sitting next to a city park on top of the curb. A friend was behind me, he stopped and asked if I could do that trick again, and then offered me a beer.
On Monday as I was headed to work, I saw city water crews working on water main breaks, waist deep in freezing water. After that I did not complain about the weather.

sitting in the cab of a water truck heating water at the POL yard at Carswell. Bitter cold. A hose cart run was a near death experience.

Worked the regular job then drove 28 miles on ice to feed extra hay and cubes. Then broke ice so the cows could drink. Made for long days.

I worked at the Dillard's distribution center in Fort Worth and had to drive home to Azle the night everything froze over. I was driving a 74 Chevy Luv, and apparently something had cracked and leaked water out. On the way home my engine started heating up and when I got to a place where I could safely pull over it blew a freeze plug out. I thought I was going to freeze to death but someone who happened to be going to Azle stopped and gave me a ride.

I was living in Holland TX, going to JR College in Temple, and working in Belton. They closed work so a bunch of us went out and played tag football in jeans and T-shirts.... It was in the high teens or low 20’s....we were out there for about three hours 3pm til dark..... Oh to be young again..... Then we went to the empty mall parking lot and drove around on the ice....donuts, power slides, take off the cut the wheel and pull the emergency break spinning like a top... Cop finally showed up and asked us to leave....we said we were just practicing driving on ice....he didn’t buy it

I was living down in Corpus and left home that evening when it hit. Misting and nasty drizzle when I hit the river bridge on 37 heading north. It was freezing around the headlights, mirrors, etc on my truck as I drove north. It was 9 degrees the next morning(Christmas eve IRRC) and headed out to my hunting lease. I saw very few deer and it was a wind chill that had to be 0 or maybe even less that morning. I know in Corpus it stayed below 32 all day for 5 straight days over the holidays and many folks had left town, they did not prep for it. Busted pipes everywhere across town from those that were not at home. I know at my deer lease it stayed below 32 for 7 days in a row. I heard up in the hill country it stayed below 32 for 10 days at least...some were even a couple of more days on top of that. Coldest string of below freezing days I have seen in South Texas.
Are idiots multiplying faster than normal people?
