OP durocb Light Foot D Joined: Oct 2017 Posts: 22	Setting her reminiscing, I have killed five birds on a covey rise twice in those sixty years and can still remember were is was hunting, both times I shot four times and killed five birds. Can't remember when Texas went from three to five shots, does anybody remember. Started hunting at thirteen caring a Stevens 410. Not a wild quail in east Texas now. Thanks Dana Bizzell

I could have whipped toe entire covey out if I had been hunting for cheap meat. Quail hunting is like walking into, and out of a beautiful painting all day long. Gene Hill

The first time I ever went with the man that I hunted with for years after shot 5 on the first covey rise we ever came upon. I was amazed. He did that on a very regular basis for many years. I used to tell him we were hunting my place so he had to let me shoot a single every other time because nobody could get on a bird as fast as him. Of course we found about 25 coveys a day and the limit was 24 birds a day back then. Shackelford county.

The argument is "clean" farming eliminated habitat but where I live everything looks about the same as 30 years ago but the coveys are gone. I'm wondering is it is more birds of prey (hawks, etc.) or some type of disease. I don't buy into this habitat lose argument.

I don't buy into this habitat lose argument. im sure the farming practices have changed..... way more pesticides, cleaner fields mean less weeds, less weeds means less bugs, less bugs mean less feed for quail chicks. in my opinion farming has alot to do with the decline in our quail population in my area (missouri) im not bashing farmers at all, it is just something we have to deal with.

Quail hear UTVs and stay away from those high pressure roads . I cant tell you how many times hunting public my dogs find most birds too close to the black top roads where they cant be shot. There may be a few farms here and there but mostly just fields. Now, 30 years later- area looks the same as it always did, no new farm that mowed away all the shrubs, etc. AND YET, in such areas-I never see any quail nowadays. Maybe it is fire ants, etc. Just seems odd that the experts say it is clean farming, it must be other factors in many instances.

Improved pasture (loss of habitat), more birds of prey through protection and increased food sources, proliferation of hogs, fire ants, eye worms, liver disease and don't forget weather. When numbers are low to begin with weather plays a much bigger part in sustaining numbers. Poor old quail have too many battles to fight. Wish I had dogs again and there were huntable numbers.
