Coming home from work, to western Val Verde County, the day before yesterday I saw a flock of at least 30 or more black headed buzzards hunting for road kill. Then today I noticed that the neighbor has a couple of Huisache trees that are blooming. However, all that be said, the mesquites show no signs of doing anything. And the mesquites usually have the last word.

Lot of fresh green sprouts will bite the dust before this week is over. Those mesquites, especially the old ones rarely get bit by a frost.

Quote
"The Old Mesquites Ain't Out,'
written in 1939.by Frank Grimes Abilene Reporter-News

“We see some signs of returning spring —
The redbird’s back and the fie’ larks sing,
The ground’s plowed up and the creeks run clear,
The onions sprout and the rosebud’s near;
And yet they’s a point worth thinkin’ about —
We note that the old mesquites ain’t out!

The fancier trees are in full bloom,
The grass is green and the willows bloom,
The colts kick up and the calves bend down,
And spring’s a-pear-ently come to town;
And yet they’s a point worth thinkin’ about —
We note that the old mesquites ain’t out!

Well, it may be spring for all we know —
There ain’t no ice and there ain’t no snow,
It looks like spring and it smells so, too,
The calendar says it’s plenty true —
And still they’s a point worth thinkin’ about —
We note that the old mesquites ain’t out!”

We're suppose to go into the low single digits this week.

Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

Mesquites, no matter their size down in South Texas have been fooled many times by a late killing frost. I put my faith in the scissor-tailed flycatchers return to signal spring.

The Scissor tails have never been wrong

Some years it seems they come in late though.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I have a Canada Goose building a nest by the tank. She must not have read the weather report for this coming weekend.

Turn that water off in the barn and drain the lines if you don't need it for a week. Also cover thoes hose bibs and bring in the brass monkey. Gonna be cold for the next 10 days at least.

Many robins have invaded the area down here, usually a good sign. It's never over until after Easter in my eyes.

The black headed buzzards never migrate south from Menard County, stay here all winter. The red headed vultures migrate south to avoid the winters. Some of these black headed raskals may be wishing that they had joined the vultures over the next week...
Adios,
Gary
