Looking to get some new hard cases for regular use bolt rifles. I like the protection from the insert foam types you cut to fit your gun, but most i have seen are large, heavy, and think it would be hard to keep a sling attached and make a proper cut to fit. The cheaper plano types are light and easy in/easy out, but a bit flimsy and i feel like there could be some room inside the case for the rifle to move a bit.
Curious if anyone has found a good in between case for a scenario like deer season. Where you are constantly taking the rifle in and out of the case along with vehicles. Still relatively easy to move around but not concerned of being bumped around a bit and potentially throwing the scope off.

There was a time I thought I needed hard cases and had them for everything. I sold the last three last year. Unless I was flying with a rifle/scope I didn't need them. Just used well fitting, heavily padded soft cases. The hard cases took up way too much room when not in use.
When I had them of course Pelican was great and easy to custom cut, and the Cabelas brand was a great alternative.
An unethical shot is one you take, that you know you shouldn't.

IMO, Those large , hard cases are for
1. Air Travel 2. To be Tacticool
Unless you throw your guns around in a pick up bed. Stick with the higher quality soft cases. I like the rectangle shaped cases , they usually have very good closed cell padding, good zippers and lots of storage.. The only negative, is they have a Tactical look, which is okay.
Just don't go cheap.

For air travel, I use a Tuff Pak. They are actually fairly light, and do a great job of protection. That said, you've got to make sure that your destination transport (light plane, for example) can handle the bulk. For local use, I really like this soft rifle scabbard. It's a quality unit, and very much worth the price.

Even though not your preference, I think the cheaper single gun Plano types or a quality padded soft case are the best options for the uses you are describing.

I have Pelican cases but only use them for 1. Air travel or 2. if the backseat is needed for passengers and I have to slide them in the truck bed. I went back to quality soft cases for all other travel.

Top brands are Pelican and SKB. I will agree, the main reason for a hard rifle case is:
1) air travel 2) If it has to ride in the bed of a pickup truck or somewhere that it can get damaged in a soft case
However, have you ever tried to find a soft rifle case that will fit a 26” rifle with a dialable turreted scope. Most soft rifle cases will not fit this configuration, yet the hard cases will. So, that’s another reason for me at least. I did manage to find one soft rifle case long ago at Cabelas that was long enough and big enough to fit this setup but they are rarely in stock that I have seen.

Hard case, Pelican. Mine is over 10 years old. It has had some expensive rifles in it, thrown in the bed of the truck, and been in all the weather. Inside contents have been untouched. Soft case, I'm about to give this a try. https://triadtactical.com/triad-precision-rifle-carry-case/Every Triad Tactical product I have ever bought has been flawless. Some of their accessories have been with me for over ten years. Great company to deal with. MADE IN USA

I brought a cheap soft case many years ago. It's done for, one of the handles has broken off, and it is not big enough to fit the new big rifle.

For rifles with Suppressors or longer rifles with big scopes these are best single soft side have found. https://www.cabelas.com/shop/en/cabelas-xtreme-long-range-rifle-caseI can leave bipod on or pouch on side will hold two bipods and water proof pocket for stamp copy or dope sheets. They make short and long version

I saw some at harbor freight that actually looked pretty good and not break the bank. Think it was made by Apache.

Pelican is great, but I'm partial to Americase as it's made of metal and built like a tank. Several trips to Africa and MX and it's held up well.

This seems to fit your bill perfectly. The padded soft case suggestions are a good idea also. I don’t think some of you are actually reading the OP. He is not asking about a case for adventure hunts or international travel. Plus doesn’t want to break the bank.

I'm with Only S&W and Buzz. I've got hard cases in my closet that I hardly ever use. the really nice, cut to fit ones are heavy as hell. Yea, I could put my rifle in it, drop it off a 10 story building, and then go shoot without having to re-sight the scope...but I need a dolly to carry the damn thing around. I mostly use soft sided cases.

I use the cheaper ones, only go bench shoot (taking up to 5 at a time) wrap each gun in a beach towel or something to take up space.
