Winter blast from the past. Never been anywhere that even looks that cold. Those tough as nails men were wearing light jackets to boot.

We had freezers and refrigerators by 1952! But then we did not have the cold to create the ice blocks either.

after loading them on horse drawn carts they would haul them to the ice house and stack using saw dust to separate to keep from forming one large block, my father as well did this years past, upper Mississippi river not sure how many times i heard the story, what i wouldn't give to hear it again. good pic thanks for sharing

Seeing this reminded me of a place in Maine where my wife and I went some 20+ years ago. Even today, during the winter, Igor and his friends cut blocks of ice from Munsungun Lake. They are stored in a earth covered barn with saw dust all around them. They use that ice for drinks, keeping things cold etc all during the spring and summer months at their camp. Even in September he showed me those blocks that had lasted all that time. Of course they don't have the heat we have in South Texas either!! Amazing to be able to do that. I don't want to!! If I knew how I would post a picture that shows one of those blocks.

Depends on where you live. Have relatives in Peoria, IL and a buddy in La Crosse, WI. For several months of the year they use the garage as a big walk in cooler.

My parents lived in Northeastern Oklahoma and took me about using an Ice Box. Had a guy that went around with a horse drawn wagon selling ice. They would get a whole block or a half, depending on how much the last batch had melted. We really live an easy live now of days compared to them.
