For ten years, sows and boars I killed in Scurry and Stonewall counties were totally gone in three days or less without ever opening up the guts or anything else. I’m now much farther East in Mills County and hogs I killed in mid-October and early November are nearly mummified, while deer carcasses dumped within a couple of yards of the hog carcasses are hit overnight. The only difference that I can see is the coyote population is considerably lower where I am in Mills County than it was out West. Maybe it’s just a matter of competition amongst the coyotes?

I know........maybe because the hog I put out is basically being refrigerated....the scavengers have simply decided not to 'Eat it all at once'. wink

Or maybe not. bolt

The dead critters are not ripening. If they don’t stink, the buzzards can’t find them. There’s a dead feral cat in my back pasture that is untouched after maybe 10 days. It had a blood pressure problem....

Buzzards and Coyotes both know exactly where the one I set out is located, they just aren't eating much of it.

The one I shot on Wednesday morning had buzzards on it by that afternoon, Colorado county. Typically there won’t be a scrap left in 2 days

I finally made it back out today and checked on the hogs. Crows were on them when I got here, one of them is half gone, the other has had something start on its stomach. This is the first year I have seen crows around and really didn’t know they were such scavengers.

I had to haul a buck deer to my bone pile about two weeks ago as it got caught up and died in a hog trap. There were 3 hog carcasses in the bone pile at the time, and there are still about 1 1/2 hogs there, but the deer was completely gone in about 4 hours ! Apparently they are a lot better eating for the critters.

Well, for sure the hides on the hogs are tougher!
After skinning a few hogs I understood why footballs are made from pigskin.

Looks like a Republican, Democrat and Independent Buzzard (off to side) in this Vid.

Repub and Dem fighting (of course) and the independent just watching.

NONE of them doing their job! Sigh............

Hogs on my property are still being eaten fast - the last one I got earlier this month was picked clean within a week. Interestingly, I was outside with several buddies BBQing and had coyotes within 220 yards yapping/howling around the area I left that hog. Surely they could hear us (we weren't trying to be quiet). They seemed to be more interested in eating than scared of us.

I doubt there is much coyote hunting in my area. At night, I consistently hear multiple packs of coyotes making their noises in several directions. I imagine temperature has something to do with it, but I have a ton of coyotes in my area and the hog carcasses always get picked clean within a week or so.

Seems to vary a lot lately. I left a 200 pounder at the bone pile yesterday morning and it's all gone today....not a trace !

Been a full month and the Coyotes and Buzzards STILL haven't finished off this hog carcass.

Never seen anything like it. They usually clean one up in days, hours sometimes.

I made it back out to my place this evening, one of the two hogs is about half gone and the other is about 1/4 gone.

No. Going to see if I can recover the bullet this morning.

But even if left un-eviscerated they are usually cleaned up in a couple of days. Mere hours sometimes.

This one seems to be going more like 'usual', buzzards on it first thing in the morning and even a Red-tailed Hawk.

I expect the 'Yotes' will find it tonight.

Coyotes doing a little better job on this one (so far).

If they take the night shift and the buzzards handle the day shift....it should be gone fairly quick.

They've gone through this hog pretty well now. Not sure why they didn't want the previous one...but they didn't.
