Got a point from my young pointer this morning. Walked around the front of her and LLC heck broke lose. Two black hogs came busting out of the bush. One towards the dog, the other towards me. I yelled “no” to stop the dog from chasing the one on her side. The one that came by me got a full load of 20 ga. 7.5’s in the rib cage at 5 yards. I heard a loud grunt after the shot, and just kept running. Second point on hogs in the last couple weeks.

I saw pup on a chain in my neighborhood on my way several years ago. I commented about her to my neighbor`s wife. She later asked if I would take her. She had named her Princess. My wife told me to bring her home but she was not feeding a pup named Princess. I shortened her name to Sis and the trainer took her away. She was the best hot weather dog I had ever seen. A friend invited me up to his lease in north Texas. He said that he had at least 14 coveys. Sis pointed 15 of them. The temperature was in the 80s. The other dogs would wallow in the ponds. Sis would lick the water and be on her way,
I had a lease up north of Victoria. Sis went over a little hill I followed. She had a pig down. I shocked her off of it. The pig ran and Sis heeled it twice. She continued that pattern for several years.

I never got any papers on Sis. There are no truer words. " you can't take the papers in the field with you." Sis could track the flight of a cripple with her nose.

Hate when that happens. Dust does fly when you hit with a shotgun blast.

I've found areas in thick brush where hogs have been while looking for rabbits & chachalacas but so far haven't had any personal encounters with them yet. I'm guessing that hog that took the 20g load of 7.5 shot is feeling a bit sore this morning. lol

PeeWee would always flag a little on hogs, and generally "juke", or step from side to side on intervals. Once the hog was routed, he wanted nothing to do with them. My pretty little Libby, could not resist picking up piglets and parading with them. Always made me nervous about Mama's where abouts !

My favorite brace of quail dogs were sisters and the exact opposite on hogs. Kate would point at a distance with great style and stand when the flushed. Dixie loved to chase them and catch the piglets. Killed many and never seemed to get sideways with their parents.

Jenny is real leery of both hogs and their scent. She will hang real close to me for a little while when she sees one or comes across their scent. She is also indifferent about snakes - she simply avoids them. If a snake comes into the dog pen my other two dogs go nuts while she just ignores them.
That’s a neat story about Sis, Bill. She sounds like a great one.

Thanks a bunch. I have fond memories of Sis. I took her and Ginger over to a Frances Truchard pasture near Eagle Lake. Sis pointed and I shot a double. Sis swallowed one and delivered the second to my hand. She never chewed another bird. I eventually gave up shooting doubles. I figured I was nor really there for the cheap meat.

Had two pointers across the years that were hog pointers, both would point them with their head high and both were out of Guard Rail lineage (could have been coincident on that). Had a 220lb boar charge an ex Marine sniper buddy of mine, and luckily he waited until it was about 6 or 7 yards away and blew the side of the boars head off...I am pretty sure I would have shot my two bird shot rounds at about 15 yards and then turned and looked for a tree if he would have charged me

Ol Daisy my 16 yrs old Brittany was a hog pointing girl. I could always tell when it was hogs, as I would get close to where she was pointing, she would cut her eyes at me. I could call it almost every time. Killed one with heavy loaded 7.5's off one of her points.
Haven't had it in years but never spit any out. I am a sucker for happy endings and strapped cowboys.

Had a Pointer run in on a sow and her piglets, years ago. She comes out with a pig in her mouth followed by the mama, who wasn’t happy.
We all unloaded on the sow. One of the fellows took her in for processing and a buddy kept a couple of the small one to BBQ.
