Great photo! And I remember some of those old cars on places used as deer blinds. Ours usually had a ringtail in them.

Man oh man, that brings back some early memories of hunting with my Dad around Junction on a friends lease and later in Refugio and Gonzales Counties. You can’t put a price on those early hunts that inspired a passion we all share today. Thanks for the trip.

Great picture TLK
Brings back a lot of memories for me hunting with my mom and dad as well.

Much more simple time back then for sure then today.

Did he write for either the SA Express news back then or the SA Light paper??

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

Back then my Dad was religious about being in the stand at least one full hour before light. We would leave camp and he would stop in the pitch dark and say "ok hop out and start walking - your stand is 400 yards that way. If you cannot find it and it starts getting light then sit down next to a tree and hunt."

He then would say "when you are done still hunt back to camp." He taught me "take three steps, stop and look for 5 minutes, then three more steps." Took a dang long time to get back to camp but I learned how to really hunt and killed a lot of deer that way. Fun times

Wow, my Dad did the same to me growing up hunting in the E. TX bottoms and piney woods. I'll admit there were mornings I could not find my way to the board in the tree and had to sit on ground. He taught me same way of still hunting on walks out back to camp. I was always last to arrive back at camp at couple hours after other hunters. I still practice same slow/still walk hunting today and also have killed many bucks that way. It's so much more rewarding that just sitting in a comfy box although as I age the box blinds beat the hell out of sitting on a board.
Thanks for sharing. I'm going to dig out some old photos now and share with him on his upcoming 80th

I lost my dad a couple weeks ago. Yesterday I was going through some old hunting pics and found one of him skinning a buck in Sonora around 75 or so. When I looked at the knife he was using, I started digging in another box and found it!! I'll now carry that knife from here on out. Sentimental I know but I sure miss him and our morning coffees.
